A poor puppy who was found abandoned in a cage and covered in permanent marker is finally getting some much-needed love from a brand-new family — and she couldn't deserve her happy ending more.
On Friday, May 25, Jenn Thomas — the shelter director for the Ohio-based Ross County Humane Society — discovered a white female puppy in Yoctangee Park with the words "FREE" and "GOOD HOME ONLY" written on her fur in permanent marker. Shortly after finding the puppy, Thomas posted photos of the sad scene on the Ross County Humane Society's Facebook page with a very direct message to the pup's previous owners and other animal abusers like them.
"This is not acceptable," she wrote. "This is a puppy [who was] left in a cage with the words "FREE" and "GOOD HOME ONLY" and some other words I can't make out in permanent marker on her fur. The loving staff is working on getting her cleaned up. She will not be free, but we will make sure that she gets a good home. Please fix your pets and stop disappointing me in being decent human beings."
The shelter's caring staff, who had quickly fallen in love with the abandoned pooch, decided to give her a name: Marvella. They also set about cleaning her up and making her feel comfortable, safe, and healthy — and Thomas was sure to spread the word to the many people who now wanted to know more about Marvella's fate. Even better news? Applications to adopt her were pouring in.
"Marvella was given a bath to remove as much of the permanent marker as possible, and spent the day in the office with the shelter staff getting lots of treats and attention," Thomas wrote in an updated Facebook post on May 28. "She has received her first round of vaccines and will be available for adoption later this week. She has had so many applications for her that we are positive she will find a loving forever home."
And find a loving home she did! Once Thomas took a good long look at nearly 100 applications, she chose a local applicant named Linette Wrightsel, whose daughter was already head over heels for Marvella based on her photos alone, to take the sweet pup home for good. Marvella looks so happy with her brand-new forever family in the photo below. Seems like a perfect fit, doesn't it?
Thank goodness this sad story had such a happy ending. We can't imagine how scared Marvella must have been cooped up in that cage all by her lonesome, but we're sure the Wrightsel family is going to take very good care of her. She deserves it.
