Oh No! The Queen Just Got Reported to the Police for Breaking One Common Law

Tags:

There’s no doubt that the Queen enjoys many perks as the ruling monarch of England, including being able to drive without a license and travel without a passport. And as it turns out, she’s even immune to parts of the law, too!

On June 19, Her Majesty was reported to the West Yorkshire police for not wearing a seatbelt, while she was traveling in her official car from Buckingham Palace to Westminster to deliver her speech at the State Opening of Parliament with her son, Prince Charles.

But despite the complaint, the Queen couldn’t have been arrested: According to U.K. law, she can’t be prosecuted, nor can criminal proceedings be taken against her. Still, we’re sure she wasn’t all too happy about the news.

Check out everything that went down from the Queen’s recent incident.

In a statement via Twitter, the police pointed out that it was not an emergency, and 999 (Britain’s equivalent of 911) should not have been called.

Even more to the public’s amusement, the Metropolitan Police posted: “999 call received reporting that the Queen isn’t wearing a seatbelt. #not999 #norevenwestyorkshire.”

Still, we’re just glad the Queen is okay. After all, you should always wear your seatbelt whenever you’re driving—whether you’re royalty or not!
