Rita Moreno may be petite, but she has a larger than life level of talent and charisma. She has plenty of awards to show for it, too, including an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony — also known as the EGOT — one of the most enviable achievements in the entertainment industry. Now that she’s inching closer to her 90s, the actress isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Just last year, she attended the Academy Awards ceremony in the very same dress she wore when she picked up and Oscar for West Side Story in 1962!
So what's her secret for staying so vibrant? She admitted to People that she actually struggled with severe acne in her younger days. “I used to get those big purple jobs,” she explained, “But not a lot of them, thank goodness, because you really couldn’t see them in the films that I did.” Back then, Rita relied on a harsh treatment of scrubbing acetone on her blemishes to subdue them, but today she’s keeps things much simpler.
"It’s bare minimum. I don’t do anything except keep my skin clean and moisturized and they want to smack me,” she joked. “They say ‘It’s not fair!’ I really sympathize with them but I don’t have any problems with my skin.” Rita is especially lucky in that department considering she used to have a propensity for staying out in the sun until she “looked like a piece of bacon.” She credits good genes for her youthful skin.
As for keeping her mind sharp, the actress puts in a little more work. “I write with my left hand even though I’m right-handed,” she claimed. “I walk backwards in a very safe place — anything that engages your brain.” Though unorthodox, after completing a three season run on the Netflix reboot of One Day at a Time this year — and stealing nearly every scene she was in — it’s hard to argue with her methods.
We can’t wait to see even more beauty and talent from Rita in the years to come!
