Rob Lowe Swears By This Fizzy Drink to Keep His Christmas Tree Alive
Anyone who’s ever brought home a fresh Christmas tree for the holidays has likely also experienced the disappointment of finding dried out pine needles covering their floor after a few days. Apparently, Rob Lowe has the answer to this pesky problem.
When he visited the Ellen Degeneres Show back in 2019 to promote his Netflix movie, Holiday in the Wild, Ellen asked about Lowe’s own festive family traditions, particularly when it comes to decorating. Although he admitted to letting his wife take the reins on most of the trimmings, Lowe said he is on a mission to make sure the tree stays alive long enough to actually see Christmas day.
“I’m obsessed with it drying out too soon,” he explained. Apart from just not looking very jolly when a tree starts shedding its needles, Lowe pointed out that they can also easily become a fire hazard. Ellen was quick to suggest adding some 7 Up to his watering routine, and Lowe nearly jumped out of his seat saying, “Thank you! You know my trick!”
More specifically, Lowe relies on a half-and-half mixture of the lemon-lime soda and water. “I am obsessed with this. This is all I care about during the holidays,” he said — and he wasn’t joking. His son, Johnny Lowe, 24, happened to be sitting backstage sending snarky messages that popped up throughout the chat. (The younger Lowe has a habit for poking fun of and “trolling” his dad on social media, so Ellen thought it would be fun to let him do it for a live audience.) According to Johnny, “It’s the only thing he’s ever done around the house.”
And while there may not be any scientific proof to back Lowe’s fizzy drink technique, experts from Garden’s Alive claim that trees and flowers “like the sugar and citric acid” and that some believe the flavoring of the soda helps act as a preservation. They recommend adding a bit less than Lowe, though, just about one cup of 7 Up to three cups of water in your tree’s reservoir.
Still, judging by the photo Lowe posted of his family’s tree certainly looks healthy and hydrated on top of being decked out in holiday cheer:
