Here’s What the Royal Family Will Eat for Christmas Lunch

Every family has their own traditions they enjoy throughout the holiday season. For instance, my family always opens one gift on Christmas Eve, which we all know will be a new board game for us to play that night. The royal family is no different with their own unique traditions. You might assume Queen Elizabeth and her large family to make a big deal about lavish gifts and dinners, but they actually tend to keep things pretty low key, at least when it comes to their annual Christmas lunch. According to a report from Cosmopolitan, former royal chef Darren McGrady claimed the family has the same meal each year:

After church, that’s when they have a big lunch that includes a salad with shrimp or lobster, and a roasted turkey, and all of your traditional side dishes like parsnips, carrots, Brussels sprouts and Christmas pudding with brandy butter for dessert.

That’s a pretty simple meal when you think about how much more they could request. In fact, it sounds a lot like the same meal most families dig into on Christmas day. Perhaps your family can add some royal charm with some brandy butter pudding on your plate this year, too.

Once they’re done eating, the royals gather to watch Elizabeth’s annual Christmas speech, which is pre-recorded. Later on in the evening, they get together again for a fancier, black-tie dinner buffet. McGrady explained how they don’t eat small bites and appetizers for this meal, but indulge in 15 to 20 chef-carved dishes instead. Appetizers are more of a New Year’s thing for the royal family, it seems.

Of course, just like us and our own families, the royals are simply happy to be able to spend Christmas together! We can’t wait to see all the heartwarming photos of Harry and Meghan, William and Kate (and maybe a new sighting of little Prince Louis!), and the rest of the royal family hanging out for the holidays.
