Loving their lives with Lilibet! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle became proud parents of a baby girl in June 2021.
The little one joined big brother Archie, who arrived in May 2019. “Archie absolutely adores his little sister and gives her lots of kisses,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly after Lili’s birth. “He’s held her with the help of his parents.”
The insider added that since Archie was “such a kind, loving child,” there weren’t any “jealousy issues” at play.
Two months prior to becoming a family of four, another source exclusively told Us how “excited” the toddler was for his big brother role. His parents were “trying to give Archie all the attention he [could] handle” the insider said in April 2021, noting that the former military pilot and the Suits alum were “a little worried” about transitioning from one kid to two.
Sure enough, Harry said during a July 2021 royal event with Ed Sheeran that two was “definitely a juggle.”
He and the former actress announced their pregnancy news in February 2021, the same month that they made their royal exits permanent. “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother,” a spokesperson for the pair told Us in a statement at the time. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”
The reveal came nearly one year after the Los Angeles native suffered a miscarriage. The Deal or No Deal alum wrote about the pregnancy loss in a November 2020 essay for The New York Times, writing, “After changing [Archie’s] diaper, I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right. I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.”
Meghan added at the time: “Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by a few. In being invited to share our pain, together we take the first steps toward healing.”
Obsessed With Archie
The Spare author revealed that Lili is “obsessed” with her older brother.
“The gap between me and William was very similar to Archie and Lili,” Harry said during his ITV interview in January 2023. “And to see Lili obsessed with Archie and Archie like, ‘No, no, Lili, I need my space. I need my space now.’ I get it. … I get how irritating the younger sibling can be to the older sibling.”
“I think at the moment, I see a lot of my wife in Archie,” the duke said in the finale episode of Netflix’s Harry & Meghan docuseries, which aired in December 2022. “I see a lot of my mom in Lili. She’s very Spencer-like. She’s got the same blue eyes. … Golden-reddish hair.”
“My son, my daughter, my children are mixed race, and I’m really proud of that,” Harry said in an episode of Netflix’s Harry & Meghan. “When my kids grow up and they look back at this moment and they turn to me and say, ‘What did you do in this moment?’ I want to be able to give them an answer. I think it’s such a responsibility as human beings that if you bring a small person into this world that you should be doing anything you can to make the world a better place for them.”
Her Morning Routine
Meghan gave a glimpse of her and Harry’s “chaotic” mornings with Lili and Archie during a November 2022 episode of her “Archetypes” podcast. “She’s a year and a couple of months old [and] in the thick of it — toddling,” the duchess said, noting that her daughter had “just started walking.”
Later that month, Meghan told podcast guest Mellody Hobson that she wanted her children to be “self-sufficient” in the future.
Chasing Her Dreams
When asked whether she would support Lilibet going into acting someday, the former TV personality told Variety in October 2022, “I would say, ‘Great!’ When you become a parent, you genuinely want your kids to find the things that bring them complete joy.”
She added: “There are so many people that will talk about what opened the door for my children. But it still takes talent and a lot of grit. We’re creating multidimensional, interesting, kind, creative people. That’s who our kids are.”
The BetterUp CIO gave a rare update on his daughter’s milestones during an October 2022 video call with winners of the WellChild Awards. “Archie is very, very busy and Lili is learning to use her voice, which is great,” Harry gushed at the time.
Harry wants his children “to grow up in a better world,” he told child reporters from Kinderdcorrespondent in April 2022, adding, “[I want them] to grow up in a fairer world, a safer world, a more equal world.”
During a February 2022 event, Harry told Serena Williams that “aiming for … mental fitness” can be a “bumpy road” while raising two kids, adding, “I’ve now put in about half an hour, 45 minutes in the morning when it’s like, ‘OK, one of the kids has gone to school, the other one’s taking a nap.’ There’s a break in our programs. I either … work out, take the dog for a walk, get out in nature, maybe meditate.”
“Someone told H and I: ‘When you have one kid, it’s a hobby, and two children is parenting,'” Markle told Ellen DeGeneres in November 2021. “Suddenly we realized, ‘Oh, right.’ Everyone talks about what it’s like for the second child, but no one talks about the adjustment for the first child when the second one comes along. I think they have this moment of, ‘Oh, this is fun. Oh, this how it is now.'”
“We wanted to do something fun for the kids and then the kids were just not into it at all,” Markle said of Halloween on The Ellen Degeneres Show in November 2021. “Archie was a dinosaur for maybe five minutes — not even five minutes. Finally, Harry talked [Archie] into putting the [dinosaur] head on, but Lili was a skunk … like Flower from Bambi.”
Time for Teething
When Meghan told Ellen Degeneres that she would do “anything to relieve” her daughter’s teething pain in November 2021, the talk show host jokingly recommended “tequila.”
“In June, my husband and I welcomed our second child,” the former actress wrote in an October 2021 letter to US Congress supporting paid parental leave. “Like any parents, we were overjoyed. Like many parents, we were overwhelmed. Like fewer parents, we weren’t confronted with the harsh reality of either spending those first few critical months with our baby or going back to work. We knew we could take her home and in that vital (and sacred) stage, devote any and everything to our kids and to our family. We knew that by doing so we wouldn’t have to make impossible choices about childcare, work and medical care that so many have to make every single day.”
Meghan called Lili “beautiful” during a New York City visit in September 2021.
“She’s very chilled and seems happy to just sit there while Archie is running around like crazy,” Harry told Sheeran during the July 2021 event.
“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet,” he and Meghan wrote in a June 2021 statement on their Archewell website. “Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”
“She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz,” the pair wrote at the time of Lili’s birth. “Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.”
