Queen Elizabeth Is Told to Give Up This Boozy Nightly Ritual for Her Health

Tags:

Queen Elizabeth has never been a heavy drinker, but she does indulge in an evening cocktail to wrap up her busy days. Namely, a nightly martini. Now that she’s getting older, doctors have told her to cut that our her evening routine — and the Queen is reportedly happy to give up the habit.

Vanity Fair recently reported that doctors advised the head of the British monarchy to only drink on special occasions to ensure she stays in great physical health. Drinking can sometimes lead to health complications, like liver problems and an increased risk of accidents, in people as they age. Combating health issues is especially important as the 95-year old royal looks forward to her Platinum Jubilee celebrations next June. (The special event will mark the Queen’s 70th year of ruling over the British Commonwealth).

“The Queen has been told to give up her evening drink which is usually a martini,” said a family friend. “It’s not really a big deal for her, she is not a big drinker but it seems a trifle unfair that at this stage in her life she’s having to give up one of very few pleasures.”

What does Queen Elizabeth like to drink?

The Queen’s favorite drink is typically a bone-dry gin martini. She also likes a bit of Dubonnet mixed with gin, a slice of lemon, and a lot of ice, according to People Magazine.

A 2017 story also claimed she sometimes drank several cocktails a day. A former royal chef told Business Insider that Queen Elizabeth liked to pair drinks with her meals.

She first indulged in a Dubonnet and gin before lunch, a martini during lunch (or a glass of sweet wine!), and a tall glass of champagne before bed.

It’s unclear how often the Queen drinks now as she nears 96, but signs of her age have slowly started to emerge. She was most recently seen using a cane for the first time since 2003. The Queen was recovering from a knee surgery during that time.

In her latest outing, Queen Elizabeth used a simple black cane with a wooden handle to help her navigate a visit to Westminster Abbey. She was joined by her daughter Princess Anne, 71, as they attended a special service marking the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion.

Still, there’s no mistaking the Queen is in great spirits as she continues her reign. Here’s hoping she gets to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee in excellent health!
