Sears, Kmart, and Macy’s to Close More Than 100 Stores This Year
Sad news for department stores. Sears Holdings, the parenting company of Sears and Kmart, announced it would be closing 103 more stores this year. This comes shortly after Macy’s announcement that it would be shuttering 11 more stores.
The new store closures include 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears stores, which are all expected to close up shop between early March and April. While the number of Macy’s stores closing may seem small in comparison, it’s worth remembering that last year the department store released a list of more than 60 locations set to close and the news that 100 closures would take place over time. These 11 are now added onto that growing list — and these closures will lead to 5,000 job cuts for current Macy’s workers.
“While closing a store is always a difficult decision because of the impact on our customers, our associates, and the community, Macy’s is delighted to have served these communities over the years,” a spokeswoman said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a Sears spokesman said that the number of workers affected by the latest closures was not available.
