She Loved Taking Photos of Old, Abandoned Homes–But What She Found Inside One House Changed Her Life Completely

A creative photographer from Ontario, Canada, Leslie likes taking photos of old, abandoned homes, cars, and objects (things like roller skates, sewing machines, pianos, and so on), and her Instagram account is filled with artistic pictures of the decrepit yet beautiful spaces she finds in her travels.

One day, as Leslie was out taking pictures, she approached what she thought was an old abandoned home. Turns out, it wasn’t–but what she found inside changed her life for the better.

Inside she bumped into Lawrence, a lonely man who had almost no vision and who lived by himself. The driveway of his house was overgrown, the roof was caving in, and the interior appeared deserted. But Lawrence lived there–and he seemed like a man who could use a friend.

He allowed Leslie to take his picture, and chatted with her about his life. Then and there, she promised herself she’d stay in touch with her new friend, and try to brighten his days a little.

And that’s exactly what she did.

She began occasionally popping over to visit Lawrence and bring lunch, keeping him company while he enjoyed the food. Along with a few of her friends, she helped him straighten up his house, moving furniture and getting rid of broken appliances that he could no longer lift.

Obviously taking a liking to his new pal, Lawrence invited Leslie to go to a church barbecue with him, and she was happy to oblige. “Our first outing!” she posted afterward. “I was so happy he had asked me and couldn’t wait to go. It was great to see him out of the house and around the people he’s known his whole life.”

Some time later, Lawrence suffered a stroke and had to move into an assisted living facility, but Leslie still visits him often and wrote that he was doing “much better” in his new place.

“Safe and warm and seems to be fairly happy to be around some new people, although I know he misses home,” she wrote.
