While these stubborn ailments can certainly make sleeping through the night seem impossible, finding the best mattress for back and hip pain that’s most comfortable for you can make a huge difference when it comes to catching some Zzzs.

According to the National Library of Medicine, we spend about one-third of our lives sleeping (or at least trying to). Sleep is important! Not only does getting a good night’s rest give us energy to start the day, it also has countless health benefits, such as improving our moods, keeping our minds sharp, and reducing our stress levels — deeper sleep has even been linked to Alzheimer’s prevention. If aches and pains are keeping you up at night, finding the right mattress is key, and we’ve done our research to narrow down 11 of our favorites. Keep reading for answers to common questions about the best mattress for back and hip pain, including some professional chiropractic insight. You’ll be hitting the hay in no time!

11 Best Mattresses for Back and Hip Pain

Can a mattress cause back and hip pain?

Many factors can cause back and hip pain, including arthritis, pinched nerves (i.e. sciatica), and physical injuries. Unfortunately, we become more susceptible to these conditions as we age, so it’s important to make sure we take precautions to keep aches and pains to a minimum.

According to Dr. Romina Ghassemi, a Los Angeles-based chiropractor, mattresses can play a part, too. “Prolonged poor posture during the day lends a hand to a poor mattress to cause more harm to an already compromised muscular skeletal system,” says Dr. Ghassemi. In addition, New York City-based chiropractor Dr. Steve Malayil says that certain types of mattresses might not have adequate support, which could lead to more pain. “Soft mattresses, which allow the body to sink in too much, may cause the spine to be in an uncomfortable position, which may cause an increase in lower back pain,” says Dr. Malayil. “Many older spring mattresses have lost their stability and allow for less contour to the lower back. They lack the ability to mold to your body.” Therefore, it’s important to invest wisely in a mattress that will serve your needs, in addition to adopting lifestyle habits that will promote better alignment.

With that said, something else to keep in mind is sleep positioning. The way we sleep has the potential to cause pain, as different positions put pressure on different areas. “Sleeping on your side can overload the hip joint,” says Dr. Ghassemi, as side sleepers place all of their weight on one side of their bodies. To avoid discomfort, the Cleveland Clinic recommends switching up which side you sleep on, so that one side isn’t bearing all of the pressure. For the best results, however, they suggest sleeping on your back, which they feel is the ideal position, as it “evenly distributes weight across the widest surface of your body, minimizing pressure points and ensuring proper alignment of your internal organs.”

What is the best mattress for joint and back pain?

Back and joint pain are common symptoms of arthritis, which, according to a 2019 statistic from the Arthritis Foundation, affects more than 54 million Americans (and a whopping 85 percent are female — lucky us!). To help combat these conditions, look for a mattress that’s both supportive enough to relieve pressure on the joints, and also encourages proper spinal alignment. Oh, and make sure it’s comfortable for you!

“You have to think about two types of matters when investing thousands of dollars into your sleep,” says Dr. Ghassemi. “Consider two facts: One: How it feels, and Two: Is it good for me? If it’s soft on the body, does it mold to my body? Is it hard on my body?” For Dr. Malayil, support is key. “I would recommend something much firmer for patients because it allows for better support of the spine and reduces the likelihood of the spine sinking into a compromised position for extended periods of time.”

A great option for anyone experiencing joint and back pain is the Tempur-Pedic Advanced Pressure Relief ProAdapt, which comes in four softness levels, including firm for added stability. It’s made with Tempur-Pedic’s signature TEMPUR material to provide support for any vulnerable areas, while also adapting to your body for personalized comfort.

At the end of the day, there are several factors you’ll want to keep in mind when choosing a mattress. “If it’s ‘good for you’ depends on your body type,” says Dr. Ghassemi. “If you have a history of lower back pain, look for a firm mattress. If you suffer from hot flashes, stay away from fitting types. If you have difficulty breathing, choosing an adjustable mattress is essential for elevation.”

What kind of mattress is best for lower back pain?

Back pain is one of the most common conditions for stomach sleepers, as the weight in our abdomens can sink down and create a curve in our lower backs. The Cleveland Clinic actually dubs stomach sleeping the “worst position” (I’m guilty of this!), since it can also distort your neck, and recommends sleeping on your back to promote better alignment and even weight distribution.

That said, sleepers of all types can suffer from lower back pain, and if you’re one of them, look for a mattress with ample support to keep your spine in check. “Firmer mattresses, such as those made of latex and memory foam, would be much better for the lower back because it will conform to the body much better and will allow much more support to your spine,” says Dr. Malayil. We love the Solaire Adjustable Mattress from Saatva, which is made with both Talalay latex and gel-infused memory foam, and comes with a remote control to choose from 50 firmness settings for a truly customized feel.

Is a soft mattress good for hip pain?

It makes sense to assume that a softer mattress is the best option for pain relief. After all, we all want a little coddling when we’re not feeling well! However, a mattress that’s too soft can actually have negative effects on our bodies, as they can sink too much, distorting our alignment. According to Dr. Ghassemi, “We all have the same skeletal system, but our daily lifestyle, health status, and body morphology are vastly different. I can conservatively say, a soft mattress is not suitable for the hip/hip condition; it may cause more damage in the majority of people than help.” Dr. Malayil adds, “For individuals with hip pain, a foam mattress which conforms to your spine would be best. Many spring mattresses tend to apply too much pressure to the hip joint causing increased pain for many individuals. A foam mattress is helpful in this situation because it allows for the hips to lay in a comfortable position without applying overpressure to the musculature around the hip and to the hip joint itself.”

Since the hip is “one of the body’s largest weight-bearing joints,” it’s also one of the most vulnerable. As mentioned before, sleeping on one’s side can exacerbate the hip, so Dr. Ghassemi suggests enlisting the help of a pillow to balance things out. “Try mitigating damages by placing a pillow between bent knees. Bring knees to the chest by 20 to 40 percent and place a soft pillow in between the knees. This will reduce the load on the pelvis and hip and distribute the load (weight of upper leg and thigh) over the lower [leg] and help relax the body to better sleep.” No matter your sleep position, finding the best body pillow can have great benefits, including correcting your alignment, minimizing tension, and reducing pressure.

Happy customer: “This is what I imagine mattresses in heaven feel like. I had serious back pains with our old mattress. I knew I had to get serious about my mattress choice. I was hesitant to spend this much but it was without a doubt money well spent. My back pains are gone and I am no longer tossing and turning at night. You can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep.”

Happy customer: “I’ve never had such great sleep before. There are two things I immediately noticed over this past week of sleep: 1. It alleviates pressure points! Before, I would constantly toss and turn because one side would get tired of being laid on, and it was time to flip. Now, I can easily lay on one side most of the night because I no longer get that need-to-turn feeling. It’s the GREATEST. 2. I’ve been waking up on my back! This came as a huge surprise. As a major side sleeper, I’ve never slept on my back. But this past week, I’ve fallen asleep on my back quite a few times because it’s actually comfortable for the first time!”

Brooklyn Aurora Hybrid

Best mattress for arthritis
best mattress for hip pain
Brooklyn Bedding
25% off!

Buy from Brooklyn Bedding, $1,599 (originally $1,874) – Use code: WINTER25 for 25% off purchase!

Why we like it:

  • Available in soft, medium, and firm
  • Made with TitanFlex foam for responsiveness and pressure point relief
  • CopperFlex top layer draws heat away from the body

Arthritis symptoms, like pain, swelling, and stiffness, are no fun — and unfortunately, they become increasingly common as we age. Rather than surrender to the discomfort, we can take steps to improve how we feel, and investing in a supportive mattress can make a world of difference. The Brooklyn Aurora Hybrid mattress comes in three different options: soft, medium, and firm, making it a great customizable mattress to suit your body’s individual needs. For those with arthritic joint pain, a soft or medium feel might offer the most cushioning for vulnerable areas, while the hybrid design offers the best of both worlds in terms of comfort and support.

The Aurora Hybrid mattress is constructed of Brooklyn Bedding’s trademarked TitanFlex foam, which conforms to the shape of your body while offering pressure point relief. This cushy foam, combined with the support of up to 1,032 individually encased coils, encourages a comfortable sleep experience, no matter your firmness preference. To top it off, a layer of patented CopperFlex foam and TitanCool draws away excess heat from your body, so you’ll sleep cool as a cucumber.

Happy customer:Purchased the Aurora after much research. I admit that I was VERY nervous about purchasing a “bed in a box.” I have arthritis in both hips, so I did not think any bed would help. This bed is absolute heaven! No more having to get up after 6 hours in bed because of pain. It’s like a cloud, without the sinking in feeling. My bf weighs 80 pounds more than me, and he is also in love with our new bed… I was worried that it would be too soft for him, but it’s not an issue at all. It’s like the perfect bed, not too soft, but relieves pressure on my hips. Heaven. So happy with my purchase.”

PlushBeds The Natural Bliss Natural Latex Mattress

Best mattress for lower back pain sufferers
best mattresses for adjustable beds
PlushBeds

Buy from PlushBeds, $2,249 (originally $3,499)

Why we like it:

  • Made with 100 percent natural latex
  • Available in 3 height options
  • 25-year warranty

Some people prefer a “springier” mattress as opposed to a more conforming foam one, and if that sounds like you, a latex mattress is a great option. We love this Natural Bliss mattress from PlushBeds, which is made with 100 percent natural, chemical-free latex to give you that weightless, “sleeping on clouds” feeling. According to PlushBeds, this mattress is often recommended by chiropractors and orthopedic specialists due to its “buoyant feeling that gently cradles the pressure points of your body, which helps to relieve aches and pains and promote deep sleep.” There are two key latex components to the Natural Bliss mattress: the natural Talalay latex comfort layer, which offers pressure relief, and the organic Arpico support core, which helps alleviate aches and pains while promoting proper spinal alignment.

Both layers come encased in a soft, breathable organic cotton cover, which provides a cool, crisp feeling on stuffy nights. Choose from medium and medium-firm options, as well as six, eight, and 10-inch heights. Bonus: you’ll get a free sheet set with any mattress purchase, and PlushBeds is so confident about the quality of their products that their mattresses come with an impressive 25-year warranty.

Happy customer: “Have finally found the best mattress we have ever had. We are in our mid-sixties so have tried many. It wasn’t a matter of even getting used to it. Was great sleep from [the] first night! Recommended to my sister and she purchased and loves hers, too.”

Bear Hybrid Mattress

Best mattress for side sleepers with back and hip pain
best mattress for hip pain
Bear Mattress

Buy from Bear Mattress, $1,299 (originally $1,732)

Why we like it:

  • Ideal for side sleepers
  • Cooling-gel foam keeps you from feeling too hot at night
  • Multiple foam and coil layers provide support while adapting to all body types

The Bear Hybrid Mattress is popular among side sleepers, so if that’s you, read on! It comes in at a 6.1 on the firmness scale, just a tad firmer than medium, which falls into what Bear refers to as, “The Sweet Spot” (or, the range of softness that 80 percent of people prefer). Made up of four foam layers, as well as an impressive coil system, this hybrid mattress adapts to all body types to provide a comfortable night’s sleep free of aches and pains. The cooling-gel foam layer at the top keeps things buoyant and refreshing, while the premium comfort foam and responsive transition foam layers offer breathability and relief for your pressure points. If you love this mattress following the 100-night trial, your purchase is protected by a 20-year warranty for peace of mind.

Happy customer:Back relief—finally! I’m super glad I chose this mattress … I’ve had chronic lower back issues that have been worsened by previous “fancy” mattresses, but since I got the Bear Hybrid (almost 2 months ago), I’ve noticed a big improvement. I think the level of firmness is just right for me, and my back stays comfortably aligned while sleeping on my side. My black lab is also a pretty big fan and has taken to sleeping like a person with her head on the (super comfy!) pillows. All in all, I don’t think you can go wrong with this mattress or the standard pillows.”
