Have you ever looked at a Siberian husky and wondered how their eyes could possibly be so clear, bright, and stunningly blue? Unlike other blue-eyed breeds of dogs like Weimaraners and Australian shepherds (who have something called the merle gene to thank for their eye color and fur patterns), Siberian huskies have stumped everyone when it comes to the reason behind their striking eyes — until now, that is.
New research from Embark Veterinary, Inc. investigated the DNA of over 6,000 dogs to find the answer behind those blue eyes. While not all huskies have the vibrant hue for their peepers — and some have two separate colors entirely — those that do have blue eyes are unique from most other dog breeds because their body has doubled up on one of their chromosomes, known as chromosome 18. There is only one other type of dog that features the duplication: Australian shepherds, who also don’t already have the previously mentioned merle gene.
Basically, all of that scientific jargon boils down to a fact that husky owners have known all along: Their precious fur babies are extra-special! The information behind those sparkling eyes is nice to have, but Siberian husky eyes have always shined brightly in our hearts no matter what the reason is behind them. Even if you don’t happen to have one or more of these distinct dogs in your home, we can all appreciate the beauty of these pooches just as much as we do our own four-legged friends.
