Why This $600 Winter Coat Is Worth Every Penny
I’m going to level with you — I’m not a fan of the puffer coat. For all of its warm and cozy benefits, I can’t seem to get on board with that big, bulky silhouette. Whether goose or duck down or synthetic, every puffer I’ve ever encountered has a way of making me resemble a giant marshmallow that I simply despise. And so, year after year, I’ve shivered my way through winter as I opted for a more fashionable coat without any of the optimal heating properties. The beauty of this coat lies in the fact that upon first glance, you’d never know it was a puffer jacket. Its exterior is crafted with a nylon outer and has a streamlined, tailored fit that looks just like a fitted wool. Unzip it, however, and you’ll find that it’s actually a down jacket in disguise. Its synthetic, Primaloft insulation has simply been engineered to fit inside the coat, making onlookers none the wiser.
Spyder
Primaloft is a type of man-made down constructed with fibers that are a fraction of the size of a human hair, making it extremely efficient at trapping body heat and keeping cold weather out. It’s also a superior choice for those who might be allergic to real down or have concerns over how real goose or duck down — the layer of fine feathers under the exterior feathers — is sourced.
By keeping the puffy stuff on the inside of the coat, Spyder has managed to do what no other coat has: to give me superior protection from the cold without having to sacrifice my personal style. And that’s not all! This coat is also equipped with a water repellent coating to keep me just as dry as I am warm, underarm ventilation for warmer days, and a super stylish fur hood that can be detached when it starts to warm up outside. Finally, a critical seam taping ensures no amount of warmth escapes, and it comes in a neutral army green or black to suit your taste (I chose Sarge for a little pop of color).
All in all? It’s the perfect coat.
