Are you ready to go shopping?! Apparently, the folks at FremantleMedia are, because the company just announced that they're planning to bring back the classic TV game show Supermarket Sweep — and we couldn't be more excited.
After all, who doesn't love Supermarket Sweep? You surely know the show's premise, which involved eager contestants showing off their grocery-store-shopping chops by performing various tasks — like guessing retail prices of popular store items and unscrambling the names of products — in a quiz-show format.
But the highlight of every episode was by far our favorite part: In a timed race, contestants would make a mad dash through the aisles of a grocery store, loading up their carts with as many expensive items as possible, because the value of items thrown into the cart determined the winning team. It involved strategy, lots of shouting, and plenty of good-natured, innocent fun (the way things used to be, right?) and as a nation, we pretty much loved every minute of it.
Though the original Supermarket Sweep aired on ABC from 1965 through 1967, you're probably more familiar with the later incarnations that appeared on Lifetime from 1990 to 1995 and on PAX (now Ion Television) from 2000 to 2003.
"The time is ripe to bring back this all-time favorite game show which has traveled with such success over the years," Vasha Wallace, Fremantle's EVP of Global Acquisitions and Development said in a statement. "Given the interest we've had already, we're confident that everyone will be as excited for its return as we are."
No network is attached to the revival as of press time, but Fremantle plans to shop the series around at MIPCOM 2017, which takes place from October 16-19 in Cannes, France. And no word yet on who will host the revival of the iconic show, which was created by producer Al Howard and hosted by Bill Malone and later David Ruprecht.
Still, we can't wait to see what a 2017 version of the classic show entails. Who knows, maybe a celebrity edition? An online shopping spin-off? The opportunities are endless!
