Today, we’re standing up for meat loaf. The comfort food classic is both filling and easy to make, and yet it rarely gets the type of love and adoration showered on other American favorites like fried chicken or mac and cheese. Luckily, we’ve found a recipe that we’re sure will prop meat loaf back on top of its rightful pedestal.
The technique is courtesy of Liz Fourez, a mother of two who writes the blog Love Grows Wild. Her recipe calls for all the meat loaf standards (lean ground beef, eggs, bread crumbs, and so forth), with one secret ingredient so obvious, we can’t believe we never thought of it: steak sauce.
“A little bit of steak sauce inside the meat loaf (plus a little bit more spread across the top before baking) is the key to extra beefy, super flavorful meat loaf,” Fourez writes.
The blogger says she came upon the extraordinarily simple twist while reading an old Kraft magazine. She adds that the sauce “turned this dish into a bold, flavorful, beefy masterpiece that had me coming back for seconds, even thirds, every time!”
While her recipe calls for A.1. Original, she makes it clear that any steak sauce will do.
“This ain’t your momma’s meat loaf, and I promise after one bite of this saucy, beefy dish, you’ll never try another meat loaf recipe again!” Fourez says.
And we couldn’t agree more! So, say goodbye to those sad frozen-dinner-tray loaves and forget the dry rolls splashed on roadside-diner menus. Just pair this meat loaf with some mashed potatoes or a green bean casserole and you’ll find yourself in comfort food heaven in no time.
