Two Years After Wedding, Paraplegic Husband Gets Emotional First Dance with Wife

Tags:

This is a story about true, everlasting love, and it ends with a long-awaited dance that will melt your heart and make you cry.

In 2009, Joel Jackson was thrown from a car during a serious accident and had his spine separated from his skull, spending weeks in a coma. His girlfriend (since they were 14!), Lauren, stayed by his side through the ordeal–and when the couple married in 2013, it was a day they’d once been unsure they’d ever see. Now, two years later, the husband and wife have shared another moment they’d once only dreamed about: their first dance.

At the couple’s wedding two years ago, Joel had been wheelchair-bound and unable to walk, so Lauren told him, “When you can walk, I want you to dance with me.” Two years later, they got their moment at Brooks Rehab center in Jacksonville, Florida. Thankfully, cameras were on hand as the longtime lovebirds, both dressed in T-shirts and shorts, took their first dance steps together as a married couple to the song “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain, played over the gym’s loudspeaker.

The long-awaited, emotional moment was made possible thanks to a special “zero-gravity” rehabilitation harness Joel can now use. Watch the clip here–but get those tissues ready first.
