Why perimenopause feels like such a mystery

Between 50 and 75 million women are navigating perimenopause and menopause in the US right now. And understandably, it’s a time of confusion. “Perimenopause is the zone of chaos,” says Dr. Haver.

Some perspective: The National Institutes of Health has 1.2 million articles on pregnancy. “Now think about what that represents—how many institutions, how many researchers, how much money to fund all these studies,” says Dr. Haver. But if you search NIH for the word menopause, “there’s just under 100,000 [entries]. And if you type in the word perimenopause, there are about 8,000. So we have a lot of work to do.”

“Women are owed centuries of research on this,” she adds. But while we wait for science to catch up, Dr. Haver is here to help you understand what’s happening in your body right now.
