Alexandra Stratyner, PhD
Alexandra Stratyner, PhD, has many years of experience working and consulting as an established licensed psychologist. She currently works with patients in individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, couples and family therapy, and assessment and consultation services to preadolescents, adolescents, young adults, and adults in the Manhattan-based Stratyner & Associates practice.
Dr. Stratyner specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy approaches, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, mindfulness skills training, and mindfulness-based relapse prevention and integrative approaches to therapy. Above all, she is motivated to provide an integrative, culturally-competent, strength-based approach to counseling psychology.
In addition to her practice as a psychologist, Dr. Stratyner serves on the voluntary faculty of the Mount Sinai Health System. She is also an Adjunct Faculty member at New York University, and a member of the core faculty for the Pediatric Substance Use Disorder Education Program at Caron Treatment Centers in New York.
In 2020, Dr. Stratyner became the founder of the Freelance Performers and Mental Health COVID-19 Resource Network. She also became co-chair the New York State Psychological Association’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, and an elected member at large to the executive committee of the Association.
Dr. Stratyner completed her clinical internship at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai West Hospitals, as well as clinical externships at the Addiction Institute of New York, Mount Sinai West and New York Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Division/Weill Medical College of Cornell University, among others. Dr. Stratyner has worked with individuals across the lifespan and in a diverse range of settings, including internationally in Trinidad and Tobago.
Dr. Stratyner received her Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology and her Master of Arts in Education in Counseling Psychology degrees from Seton Hall University. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Bryn Mawr College, Magna Cum Laude, with honors in psychology. Dr. Stratyner has completed specialized training in competencies for counseling transgender clients training, DBT Skills training, (Behavioral Tech certification), models of racial identity development and multicultural competencies training, and Naloxone training for providers.
In 2020, Dr. Stratyner received the Sidney A. (Bud) Orgel Memorial Award and was named a Distinguished Fellow from the New York State Psychological Association. In her published works, Dr. Stratyner co-authored a case report on Complex PTSD and new diagnosis in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice. Her doctoral dissertation explored the influence of doctoral psychology trainees’ personal cannabis use, perceptions of cannabis’ risks, and attitudes toward substance use on ability to identify cannabis use disorder.
Select presentations that reflect the breadth and depth of Dr. Stratyner’s specialized knowledge includes: Government Testimony for the New York State Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction; a presentation for the New York Association for Marriage and Family Therapy on the mutual impact of our personal and professional lives; presentations on the effect of marijuana on co-occurring disorders for the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Westchester Division; trends in addiction for New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Medical College of Cornell University Westchester Behavioral Health Center; recognition of mental health challenges during the pandemic for the Zuckerman Institute of Columbia University; Non-judgement as a skill for Caron Treatment Centers; the use of process groups in psychology training for Mount Sinai Hospital’s Department of Psychology and the New York State Psychologist Association (NYSPCA; the utilization of cultural humility in clinical psychology supervision for NYSPA; and the provision of mental health services to performing artists, also for NYSPA.
