Joe Schwarcz, PhD.
Dr. Schwarcz is Director of McGill University’s Office for Science and Society, whose mission is to separate sense from nonsense. He is widely known for his informative and entertaining public lectures on topics ranging from the chemistry of food to the mind–body connection. Recently, the Office has focused on unraveling the mysteries of COVID-19.
Professor Schwarcz has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and for interpreting science for the public, including the American Chemical Society’s Grady-Stack Award, the first non-American to do so. He has also received the Canadian Chemical Institute’s Montreal Medal, the Balles Prize for Critical Thinking, and McGill’s Principal’s Prize for Public Engagement Through Media. In addition, he has been awarded honorary degrees from several Canadian universities.
