Mason W. Freeman, MD

Dr. Freeman graduated from Harvard College and earned his MD from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed his internship, residency and endocrinology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he later served as Chief Resident in Medicine.

After a postdoctoral research fellowship at MIT, he returned to Mass General to lead the Cardiovascular Health Center and became Chief of the Lipid Metabolism Unit. His research has focused on the role of macrophages and lipid metabolism in atherosclerosis, including pioneering work on scavenger receptors, foam cell formation and cholesterol transport. He remains clinically active, teaching at Mass General and directing the Lipid Clinic he founded.
