Happy February, and therefore, happy Black History Month! This month is an opportunity to celebrate Black culture and educate yourself on its rich history. And, another way to celebrate Black History Month is by putting your money toward and supporting Black-owned businesses. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, as of February 2024, “Black business owners own 3.5 million businesses and employ more than 1.2 million people.” Plus, their total sales accumulate to $217.3 billion. Needless to say, Black-owned businesses are a crucial part of just about every industry. Here, we take a look at some of the best black-owned beauty brands, including black-owned hair care, skincare and more.

If you’re looking for an incredible Black-owned, clean hair care brand, look no further than Nuele Hair. They rely on natural ingredients to repair and support hair, and these ingredients won’t have negative long- or short-term health effects. Nuele was founded by Anne Cheatham, MSN, CRNA and Christine Martey-Ochola, PhD. Both “have backgrounds in biochemistry, biological research, medicine and food science and have been formulating cosmetic products while using their knowledge of food science and natural ingredients for over 30 years,” the brand’s website says.

I personally have met Marty-Ochola and she is one of the kindest founders I have ever had the privilege to meet. It’s obvious after talking to her and hearing her background that she puts passion and dedication into her brand. One of my favorite Nuele products is their Hair Serum, which is a heat protectant and moisturizer for hair.

Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross

For those with curly manes, we love Tracee Ellis Ross’ hair product brand, Pattern. Ross, a highly successful and well-known actress, producer and director, founded Pattern in 2019: “This has been 20 years of dreaming, 10 years in the making (I wrote my first brand pitch in 2008 right after Girlfriends), 2 years of working with chemists and 74 samples later,” she wrote on the brand’s website.

Pattern is made for those with curly, coily and tight hair textures, and their products are beloved by many. One of our favorites from the line is the Pattern Detangling Nectar, an amazing detangler for curly, textured hair.

Shani Darden Skin Care

Shani Darden is one of the most sought-after estheticians today and has built a very impressive clientele including Kelly Rowland, Shay Mitchell, Jessica Alba and Jennifer Aniston. She founded her own line of products, Shani Darden Skin Care, and opened her own studio after being encouraged by clients and friends.

Her best-selling product is the Shani Darden Retinol Reform, a gentle retinol serum that is non-irritating and great for sensitive skin.

Briogeo Hair

As a beauty editor, I’ve tried a countless number of hair products and brands, and Briogeo is easily one of my favorites. You probably have seen the viral videos on TikTok and other social media platforms praising the brand’s incredible plant-based products for all hair types and textures.

Briogeo was founded by Nancy Twine in 2013, after being inspired by the passing of her mother to enter the beauty world. She started her career in finance, but nearly halfway through, lost her mother, who was a doctor and chemist. “This journey led me to reconnect with memories that brought me the most joy and happiness: the times I spent with my mom when I was young, concocting beauty treatments from scratch in our kitchen,” Briogeo’s website says. One of their must-try products that’s currently sitting on my shower shelf is the Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask.

Ami Cole

Created specifically for melanin-rich skin, Ami Colé is a standout makeup line for people of color. Ami Colé was founded by Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye in May 2021 in Harlem, New York, but is inspired by the country of Senegal. N’Diaye-Mbaye is a first-generation Senegalese-American and her brand’s mission “is to bring women of color, who have been historically underserved in the beauty industry, clean, high-performing products.”

A favorite from the line is the Ami Colé Skin-Enhancing Stick, available in 15 shades. It’s made with skin-nourishing baobab seed extract, hibiscus flower extract and shea butter and isn’t heavy on the skin.
