What were the outfits of ‘Gilmore Girls’ like?

If you’ve never watched the show or just need a refresher on the outfits of Gilmore Girls, let us fill you in. The show premiered in 2000, but if you didn’t know this, you would be able to tell by the fashion. The early 2000s were known for classic denim (think jean jackets and low- to mid-rise jeans), cozy layering (like simple cardigans and zip-ups) and mismatched patterns, along with blazers, leather jackets and classic silhouettes. You see all this and more worn by Lorelai and Rory in Gilmore Girls. While their outfits weren’t super “out there” or “stand out,” their simplicity is part of what makes the show so comforting and nostalgic — and, it went so well with the characters and setting, as it was set in a small town in Connecticut.

And don’t get us wrong, while the outfits of the series don’t typically come across as super bold at first glance, Lorelai and Rory — especially Lorelai — definitely had their own way of spicing up an outfit, from tying a bandana in their hair, adding a spunky hat or even tossing on a faux fur coat.

Rory’s Chilton uniform

Since Rory attending Chilton — the preppy, snooty private school outside of town — was a major storyline of the show, we have to start off with her Chilton uniform. The plaid skirt was complete with a sweater vest and tie, as well as usually a blazer. We see Rory sporting this outfit in many of the episodes from the first few seasons.

Lorelai’s classic turtleneck

Lorelai Gilmore loved many things, from her coffee at Luke’s Diner to running the Independence Inn, but one fashion staple she loved is a good turtleneck. In this look, she’s wearing a simple, brown turtleneck layered under a leather blazer, and paired with a pencil skirt. It’s classic yet chic, and very Lorelai Gilmore.

Lorelai’s painting outfit

When Lorelai lets down Luke, potential love interest, friend and owner of her favorite diner, by accidentally forgetting about plans to paint the diner, she goes ahead and surprises him by painting it all on her own overnight. Her outfit in this scene consists of a faded graphic tee layered over a long sleeve, a pair of jeans and a bandana tied around her head to keep her hair back — all complete with paint splatters, of course.

Lorelai’s love of denim

The early 2000s were all about denim, and so were Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. You often saw the two sporting comfy-casual jeans on weekends or strolling the town in a chic jean jacket.

Lorelai’s fur coat

Those trendy, faux-fur coats and jackets making a comeback that you see everywhere now? Well, Lorelai Gilmore was way ahead of the game. In this episode, she stays warm with a corduroy, fur-lined jacket.

Funky patterns and hats

This snapshot from the series truly is the epitome of early 2000s fashion in one photo. Turtleneck, fun patterns and deep, warm colors.
