What is a bixie cut?

Length-wise, the bixie is closer to that of a bob with the textured elements of a pixie. It’s a versatile look that is defined by layers to create a tousled look that flatters just about anyone—whether you have fine hair or thick locks! Additionally, the style of your bixie is entirely up to you. Some may prefer a sleeker look, while others are drawn to the choppy, casual vibe that defined many of the ’90s bixies we loved.

The bixie haircut is growing in popularity today because it feels like a more customized take on shorter hairstyles,” Devin Toth, a hairstylist at Salon SCK, told Allure. “In essence, a bob’s a bob—no matter what kind it is—and can be heavy. A pixie’s super-short length limits customization. A bixie, however, lives in between the two with more length to work with and a style that doesn’t feel as weighty.” Think a bixie might be the move? Who looks best with a bixie haircut?

The beauty of the bixie is that it’s a style that works with a variety of hair types and textures. Those with fine or thin hair might benefit from a style like this, as the layers and tousled look can create volume and dimension as opposed to a layerless cut. On the contrary, those with more textured locks, wavy, and curly hair can rock this style as well. Those with wavy hair can lean into the tousled style, while those with curly coils can lean into a bouncy and fun approach.

Straight and textured hair both look great with a bixie cut, but they will manifest a little bit differently,” said celebrity hair stylist Chris Appleton in conversation with PureWow. “When cutting wavy or curly hair for a bixie, you can have some fun with layers because of the large amount of texture within these hair types. On the other hand, you have to be a bit more precise with cutting layers for a bixie on straight hair, since you want to make a [conscious] effort at making the layers flow effortlessly.”

How to ask for a bixie cut at the salon

When asking for a bixie cut at the salon, start by explaining that you want a hybrid between a bob and a pixie—something with the cropped, lightweight feel of a pixie but with the softness and longer layers of a bob. Bring inspiration photos if you can, and let your stylist know whether you want a more choppy, tousled look or something sleeker and more structured. Be clear about your hair texture and styling routine, so they can tailor the cut to flatter your features and fit your lifestyle.

How to style a bixie cut for different hair types

Styling varies depending on the type of hair you have and the style of bixie you’re going for. The baseline characteristics that define the bixie are choppy layers for a piece-y and textured hair style, but how you wish for them to lay will alter the type of products you might use. For the grungier, tousled look, a texturizing spray is your friend. For a sleeker look, a blow dryer or straightener will do the trick. If you decide to pursue a bixie, visit a trusted stylist who knows how to work with your hair and allow them to guide you through the proper styling for you to use as a reference.
