See the TikToks that show the makeup trend in action

Inspired by the breathtaking colors of a picturesque sunset, sunset blush brings warmth and radiance to your complexion. From soft pastel pinks to fiery oranges and rich reds, this trend offers a spectrum of shades to suit every skin tone. Whether you’re aiming for a subtle flush or a bold statement, sunset blush allows you to create stunning looks. Here, all the reasons to try this mesmerizing trend and the simple how-to that’s sure to leave you with a golden hour glow.

What is sunset blush?

Sunset blush mimics the vibrant and warm look of a sunset by utilizing at least 2-3 different blush shades in pink, orange, coral and even purple,” says makeup artist Kirin Bhatty, Marshalls and TJ Maxx beauty style expert. The key is to blend all blush shades in a gradient from cheek to temple to create a stunning ombre effect that emulates the layered colors of a sunset sky.”

She adds, “the amazing thing about this trend is that you have all the power to make this look your own and experiment with it by trying out different shades of blush, adding a dewy, gold-tone highlighter to add radiance and more!”

What are the benefits of sunset blush?

1. Sunset blush blurs facial flaws

Bhatty says, “there are so many benefits to including sunset blush in your summer makeup routine. One being, mixing your blush with a liquid highlighter plumps your skin – reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and providing a luminous and natural sheen.”

2. Sunset blush warms up and enlivens skin

Professional makeup artist, Emma Davidson says, “the fusion of the different colors, like orange, pinks, peach and corals, can help bring out a natural warming of the face, which will always bring youthfulness to your look.”

Celebrity makeup artist, Dani Parkes also mentions how this blush trend creates a youthful look. She recommends using cream blush products for more mature skin as, “Using cream products lessens the look of wrinkles.” And “using a blush on mature skin rather than a contour also helps you achieve the sunset blush look while not over applying makeup.”

3. Sunset blush has a face lift-like effect

Bhatty adds, “sunset blush allows for a subtle, yet impactful, lifting effect. I recommend placing your 2-3 shades of blush upward from the apples of your cheeks toward the temples to enhance your overall complexion and create that lifted effect.” And Davidson adds that “the placement of your blush and adding an illuminating product – like a highlighter – will also help lift the face and can give you a natural glow!”

How to do sunset blush

Sunset blush step 1: Prep skin with bronzer

Shirley Pinkson, co-founder of Well People and head of education for e.l.f. Beauty advises to first prep your skin by applying 1-2 pumps of bronzing drops or liquid bronzer to “enhance your natural glow while adding some warmth.”

Sunset blush step 2: Strategically apply the blush shades

Woman applying blush

After your face is glowy and bronzed, you’re ready to start the colorful effect on your cheeks. “For the application, place your coral or orange tinted blush on the high points of the face, all you need is two dots at the top of your cheek bone, right near your temple,” advises Davidson. “Staying on the cheek bone, add two dots of your light pink blush next to the orange dots. Place one pink dot under the outer corner of your eye and the other dot closer to the apple of your cheek.”

If you prefer powder blush, we like Well People Superpowder Blush Powder and Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Luminous Powder Blush. And for those that favor cream formulas, try e.l.f. Camo Liquid Blush and Glossier Cloud Paint Gel Cream Blush.

And the liquid highlighter, which gives skin a gorgeous glow, can be placed along the top of the blush. For a liquid highlighter that we like, try Maybelline Master Strobing Liquid Illuminating Highlighter.

Sunset blush step 3: Blend the blush to create the gradient

Once everything is applied, you can then go in with your blending brush and “use the brush to buff out the dots in a tapping motion,” notes Davidson. “Start with the light pink dots, blending upward toward the orange blush, close to the temple,” she says. You’ll begin to see the fusion of the colors blend together in an ombré effect! And of course you can change the shades of these colors depending on what you like for your skin tone, do what works for you!”
