A speedy way to look refreshed and put together in mere minutes sure sounds like a dream. The benefits of a quick makeup routine
Could looking more vibrant with a quick makeup routine really be so simple? Absolutely, say the makeup pros we spoke to. “Makeup doesn’t have to take a long time to be effective!” says Katy Holland, a celebrity makeup artist who has worked with Katy Perry and Sophia Vergara. “I love a quick and easy makeup routine.” What’s more, she says a quick makeup routine should only consist of concealer, blush, highlighter, mascara, and brow gel. Plus, you won’t need a lot of fancy brushes or other beauty tools to get gorgeous.

Tips for doing a quick makeup routine
Now before we get into the quick makeup routine itself, one note: Our panel of experts agreed that it’s a must to start with moisturized skin. The reason: Hydrated skin acts like a smooth canvas, which helps makeup adhere better and last longer. That’s why Jenny Qian, makeup expert and founder of Astrobabe, a ready-to-wear makeup brand, advises using a tinted moisturizer. Her pro pick: Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40, which is available in 40 shades. “Packed with hyaluronic acid, squalane, and niacinamide, this tinted moisturizer smooths fine lines, and evens skin tone while protecting against sun damage,” she says. “The dewy finish is so flattering for mature skin, without the cakey or drying effect of heavier foundations.”
One more thing all our makeup gurus agreed upon? It’s key to select products that offer multiple benefits. “I swear by using multitasking products that work seamlessly, like a lip-and-cheek tint or stick blush,” says Maria Jones, professional makeup artist and hair stylist at CoverClap.com. “Doing so also helps reduce the need for multiple tools since you can apply them with your fingers.” And hey, as practically professional multitaskers ourselves, can’t we all appreciate the value of a product that accomplishes many things at once? Read on for the 5 must-have items the pros say will help you whiz through a quick makeup routine to make you look lovely in 3 minutes or less!
Quick makeup routine step 1: Concealer

As we lose collagen with each passing year, skin thins out, making under-eye circles appear more prominent. “Concealer is a must to brighten those under-eye circles,” says Bell. She loves the lightweight formulas of SAIE products, like Saie All Over Slip Tint Concealer, which contains hyaluronic acid to help plump up the skin. Pro tip: Dot then blend it in gently by tapping the area with your ring finger, which is weaker than your other fingers—so it won’t apply too much pressure on this delicate, wrinkle-prone skin.
Quick makeup routine step 2: Highlighter
Over the decades our complexions have lost a bit of luster, but beauty insiders advise restoring luminosity with a highlighter. “Using a liquid highlighter adds a very subtle and natural glow to the face and won’t settle into fine lines,” says Holland. “Plus, it can be applied with fingers.”
That’s exactly why Elaina Badro, makeup artist and founder of Elaina Badro Cosmetics adores the Yves Saint Laurent Nu Halo Tint, which is available in three shades. “It’s a wonderful product to help mature women look more vibrant,” she raves. “Apply it sparingly to cheekbones and a bit on the chin and forehead for a radiant finish without looking too shimmery.”
Quick makeup routine step 3: Blush
Skin’s natural cell turnover becomes more sluggish with each passing birthday, often resulting in a dull-looking complexion. Add a bit of vibrant color with a cream blush, which works best since powder blushes tend to settle into a mature skin texture. “I love the BOOM! Beauty Boomstick in Parisian Red because it’s a cream formulation, which delivers hydration and glow,” says Holland. “The stick plumps up the skin while the red shade instantly enlivens any complexion with barely anything else on!” To do: Use fingers to apply the sheer cream blush to the cheekbones, advises Bell. Bonus: The stick doubles as a lip color as well!
Quick makeup routine step 4: Mascara
The hair growth cycle slows with age, causing our eyelashes to thin out over time. “Mascara is the one must-have product that every woman needs to look younger and more awake!” insists Bell. “First use an eyelash curler to really open up the eyes, then apply a quick coat of mascara to the upper lashes—I highly suggest Thrive Cosmetics Liquid Lash Extensions mascara.” She says the unique formula thickens the lashes thanks to ingredients like castor seed oil and orchid stem cell complex, which encourages hair growth and is very gentle to take off.
Quick makeup routine step 5: Brow gel

As estrogen dips in our 40s, it can hinder hair growth and make brows appear sparse. To the rescue? A brow gel. “A soft tinted brow gel helps polish brows to frame the whole face,” says Holland. “It can also cover up gray brow hairs and even doubles as a root touchup for the hair on your head!” Try this pro pick: Glossier Boy Brow. “It defines and lifts brows while the conditioning formula adds fullness without feeling stiff or unnatural,” says Qian. “It’s particularly helpful in creating structure in brows and highlighting features.” The gel’s oleic acid and soluble collagen also boost hair growth in brows.
I tried the quick makeup routine and here’s what I thought
Armed with all these insider tips, I tried the quick makeup routine for a week. In the beginning, it took me closer to 6 minutes to complete, but I kept at it, and here’s what I learned: It’s best to lay out all items to begin with, so you can easily grab them as needed. I got speedier as I went along, and by day 5 I had my face finished in just under 3 minutes!
Not only that, but I felt more confident as I went about my day. Then one morning when I came downstairs, my husband looked at me and asked, “Are you going somewhere?” Over the years, I’ve come to learn that in husband-speak this basically means I look more polished and as if I’ve made a real effort with my appearance. I gave him a peck and said, ‘Aw, thanks!’ It was proof enough for me that this quick makeup routine really worked!
