Straightening your teeth can be quite a hassle, with lengthy orthodontic visits and the high cost of treatment. NewSmile is one of a few companies that want to change that by offering invisible braces and retainers at a fraction of the cost of traditional braces and Invisalign. NewSmile’s prices and services compare favorably to other clear aligner brands, and its excellent customer service impressed us during our mystery shopper inquiries.

Woman’s World also spoke to NewSmile founder and CEO Grant Li about its costs, processes and everything else you should know about the Invisalign alternative treatment. Grant says, “NewSmile was founded on a straightforward yet powerful belief: everyone deserves a confident smile—without the high cost and hassle of traditional braces…As someone who struggled with confidence due to misaligned teeth, I wanted to remove those barriers.”

NewSmile's orthodontists and dentists design your treatment plan

Like many other invisible aligner brands, the first step to your treatment plan is getting a mold or impression of your teeth. NewSmile will ship an impression kit to your home within a few days. Once you complete your impression, NewSmile provides a prepaid shipping label so you can return the molds to them as soon as possible.

Once they receive the impression kit, NewSmile will build a 3D treatment preview based on your impression molds. After you approve this 3D preview, NewSmile will make and ship your retainers directly to your home without the inconvenience and extra expense of going to a dentist’s office.

However, you will still be under the supervision of licensed dental professionals. “We are fully remote, making clear aligners, retainers and night guards affordable and accessible nationwide! Our team of licensed dentists and orthodontists supervises your treatment from start to finish,” explains Grant.

“Licensed orthodontists and dentists design your treatment and help oversee fabrication for custom aligners, retainers and night guards.”

NewSmile offers several different plans to fit your needs

Although NewSmile primarily focuses on clear aligners, it has several other dental products. Grant says, “Whether you’ve completed treatment with metal braces, Invisalign, or another clear aligner brand, you can still purchase high-quality retainers or night guards from us to maintain your results.””Our growing selection now includes ultrasonic cleaners, cleaning tablets for oral appliances, collagen, vitamin D3 supplements and more.

NewSmile also includes a complimentary container of teeth-whitening foam with your set of retainers.

We received great customer service when we contacted NewSmile

NewSmile offers several contact options if you need assistance, including email, chat and a toll-free number. Their current hours are Monday-Friday, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm. The website did not specify what time zone they are in but I got through to them on a Monday morning at around 10:00 am PST.  NewSmile’s phone support is not available on Saturdays, Sundays and major holidays.

Online experience

NewSmile’s website is well laid out and easy to navigate. It is a basic e-commerce website that has “How it works,” “pricing.” “contact us,” “FAQ” and other informational pages. One thing that I noticed was that when I selected “contact us” on the website, it gave me an Australian email address (team@newsmilelife.com.au). If you’re in the US, make sure you select the correct address (team@newsmilelife.com).

Mystery shopper experience

During our mystery shopper inquiries, NewSmile’s customer service impressed me. When I called the toll-free number, an agent answered in less than one minute and answered all my questions. When I emailed NewSmile, I got a response in less than 30 minutes with the same level of customer service as my phone call. Lastly, I used NewSmile’s online chat feature and got a response in less than 10 minutes. The chat agent was also very helpful and answered everything I could throw at him.

NewSmile's clear aligner treatment takes 4-10 months

NewSmile’s time frame is fairly quick, especially compared to Invisalign or traditional metal braces. Grant explained the total timeline below:

  • Impression Kit: “Ships within a few days.
  • Clear Aligners:
    • “Once we receive your impressions, we create a 3D preview of your future smile within 3-4 weeks.”
    • “After approval, your full set of aligners ships in about 3-4 weeks.”
  • Retainers & Night Guards: “Ship about 2-3 weeks after we receive your impressions.
  • Full Treatment Time: “Ranges from 4-10 months.”

NewSmile offers two options for treatment, which also affects the duration. The “Fast Track” plan requires you to wear your aligners for 22 hours a day. The “Night Aligner” plan requires you to only wear the clear braces for 10 hours a day, making it ideal for you to wear right before bedtime.

However, if you have a more severe case, your total treatment time may be longer. While several months may seem like a long time, it’s pretty fast compared to Invisalign’s timeframe. My orthodontist quoted me 18 months to straighten my teeth with Invisalign, while my experience with Smile Direct Club only took six months.

NewSmile offers fixed cost aligners

Because NewSmile wants to be a more affordable Invisalign alternative, pricing is significantly cheaper than both Invisalign and metal braces. Grant says, “Compared to traditional braces ($5,000+), NewSmile offers an affordable and effective alternative.” While NewSmile says Invisalign brand aligners cost $7,500 on its website, this depends on your dental history and the duration of your treatment. My dentist quoted me over $2,400, which is still nearly double the cost of NewSmile’s options.

NewSmile works with dental insurance and HSA/FSA

Dental insurance coverage will depend on your current provider and if they offer orthodontic benefits. However, NewSmile does not bill your insurance directly, so you’ll need to check your plan. Grant says, “While we don’t bill insurance directly, we provide all the necessary documentation for easy claim processing and reimbursement.”

Many insurance plans cover orthodontic treatments like clear aligners, retainers, and night guards, and they are also HSA and FSA eligible, making treatment even more affordable.

Other ways to save on NewSmile

Delivery can take up to two months

Once you approve your treatment preview after submitting your impression kit, NewSmile will produce your aligners. According to Grant, “Once we receive your impressions, we create a 3D preview of your future smile within three to four weeks. After approval, your full set of aligners ships in about three to four weeks.” Retainers and night guards are a little bit faster but still, “Ship about two to three weeks after we receive your impressions,” explains Grant.

NewSmile’s refund and return policy

NewSmile offers a limited refund and return policy. If you are not happy with the projected results of your preview, you can return the product for a refund within 30 days of purchase. However, impression kits are not eligible for a refund for hygienic reasons.

If you have issues after completing treatment, NewSmile promises to work with you to help make sure you’re completely satisfied.

NewSmile recommends replacing retainers every six months

After your clear aligner treatment with NewSmile, the next step is getting retainers. Because the aligners shift your teeth gradually over a few months, they will want to return to their original position if you don’t use a retainer. Grant explains, “Many people don’t realize that retainers should be worn for life to maintain results.”

Grant recommends replacing your retainers every six months but they can last longer with proper cleaning and maintenance, According to Dr. Yenile Y. Pinto, DDS, of Deering Dental: “With proper care, (clear retainers last one to five years. But if you grind your teeth, chew on them, or aren’t gentle with cleaning, they’ll wear out faster. If they start cracking, feeling loose, or looking too yellow, it’s time for a new set.”

When you complete your aligner treatment with NewSmile, getting your retainers is an easy process. Grant told us that there’s, “No need for new impressions if we’ve made your aligners before. Simply order online and the retainers ship straight to your door.”

If you used a different orthodontic treatment, the process is similar to NewSmile’s aligner program. Grant says, “After purchasing, customers receive an at-home impression kit to create their molds and send them back to us. Once processed, we’ll ship their custom retainers directly to their door.”

We also provide retainers for anyone who has completed orthodontic treatment—whether with metal braces, Invisalign, or another clear aligner brand.
