Have you ever picked up a random hobby that ends up becoming a unique and impressive skill? From Justin Bieber’s ability to solve a Rubik’s cube in under two minutes to Pierce Brosnan’s fire-breathing party trick, these celebs have some interesting hobbies. Keep reading to find out what some of your favorite stars have learned!
1. Justin Bieber
Hobby: Solving a Rubik’s Cube
Besides being known for his undeniable talent for singing, Justin Bieber has the impressive skill of solving a Rubik’s Cube in under two minutes. The singer showed off this talent back in 2010, impressing many, and brought it back during “Carpool Karaoke with James Corden.”
2. Steve Martin
Hobby: Playing the banjo
The Only Murders in the Building star first picked up the banjo at age 17, teaching himself how to play the instrument — even winning multiple Grammys for doing so.
“The thing about the banjo,” says Martin, “is when you first hear it, it strikes many people as ‘What’s that?’ There’s something very compelling about it to certain people… I just have an affection for it offstage and the sounds it can make. It’s like listening to a mystery when you hear some people play.”
3. Mark Ruffalo
Hobby: Unicycle
The Marvel star is not only known for his portrayal of Bruce Banner (aka the Hulk) in the cinematic universe, but Ruffalo is quite the skilled unicyclist. The actor learned this particular trick many years ago when he had the dream of becoming a clown. Of course, when he became an actor, the unicycle riding was put to the side, but he brings out this skill as a party trick every now and then.
4. Susan Sarandon
Hobby: Ping pong
Sarandon has long been an appreciator of ping pong, so much so that she opened the ping pong club, SPiN, in 2009 and has since opened eight more locations, furthering the world’s appreciation for the sport.
“Ping pong cuts across all body types and gender – everything, really – because little girls can beat big muscley guys,” Sarandon says. “You don’t get hurt, it is not expensive, it is really good for your mind. It is one of the few sports that you can play until you die.”
5. Angelina Jolie
Hobby: Knife throwing and handling
Apparently the Mr. and Mrs. Smith star has had an affinity for knives and historical weapons ever since she was a little girl and attended the Renaissance Fair. The actress has been a collector for years and is very good at handling knives, displaying her unique talent on Late Night with Conan O’Brien by showing off those skills with a butterfly knife.
6. Geena Davis
Hobby: Archery
She portrayed a wonderful baseball player in A League of Their Own (1992), but did you know that Geena Davis is a pro archer? After watching the US compete in archery during the 1996 Olympics, Davis decided to take up the sport.
“It’s very dramatic and beautiful and I just thought casually, ‘I wonder if I’d be good at that?’… I found a coach and became utterly obsessed,” she said. “Yeah, I took it up at 41 and it became my life for a couple of years.”
Davis began practicing five to six hours per day, six days a week, and in six months she was winning competitions. She was even in the running to compete in the 2000 Olympics, but placed 24th and was just shy of qualifying.
7. Pierce Brosnan
Hobby: Fire-breathing
This one is quite unbelievable — Pierce Brosnan picked up fire-breathing as a unique skill. While traveling around in London, he learned that particular act from people he met and began performing it for tourists.
Unfortunately, the actor had to give up fire breathing after appearing on Muppets Tonight in 1997, as things went all wrong as the fire ended up blowing back into his mouth, leaving Brosnan with blisters, thus ending his fire breathing days for good.
