‘We Hit It Off Immediately’: Inside Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman’s 17-Year Love
From a missed connection to a Big Sur 'I do'—their friendship became forever
Anne Hathaway is not only the princess of Genovia — she’s the princess of Adam Shulman’s heart. The actress, who is best known for The Princess Diaries (2001), The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and Les Misérables (2011), met her now-husband 17 years ago and they are happily married today. Explore the sweet relationship between Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman and learn all about their love story.
Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman didn’t date right away

In January 2008, Hathaway and Shulman met for the first time at the Palm Springs Festival, but their romance didn’t start right away. The actress explained that they were just friends for a while before taking it to the next level.
“We hit it off immediately, but it took us a pretty long time to get together,” Hathaway said. “He thought that I had a boyfriend and I thought that he had a girlfriend, so I thought that I’d better keep my distance, because I didn’t want to be that girl.”
Hathaway had been getting out of a difficult and public relationship with property developer Raffaello Folliero, which ended after he was arrested for money laundering, conspiracy and wire fraud. Thanks to this relationship, Hathaway didn’t feel trusting enough to get into another one. But when she began to fall for Shulman, that all changed.

“I also knew that I couldn’t have met him at a worse time… I took my trust out for a ridiculous joyride with him,” she explained. “And he has never hurt me… And I was right. It was scary. But as the days wore on it kept getting better and better.”
Of course, this stage of just friends didn’t last long as Hathaway and Shulman grew closer in October of that year. Soon after, the couple was spotted together multiple times, though their romance wasn’t confirmed until their first joint appearance at the premiere for A Streetcar Named Desire in December 2009.
Hathaway and Shulman’s relationship progresses

After almost three years of dating, it was confirmed that Hathaway and Shulman were engaged in 2011. Shulman, who is a jewelry designer on top of being an actor and producer, actually designed Hathaway’s engagement ring.
A year later they walked down the aisle. The couple had a California wedding in Big Sur, which was attended by 150 guests, lowkey for such a celebrity event. Hathaway has shared how in love she is with her husband.
“I knew from the second I met him that he was the love of my life,” Hathaway said of her now-husband in 2013.
Shulman continued to show up and support his wife at awards shows, including the 2013 Academy Awards, where Hathaway won her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Les Misérables.
Hathaway and Shulman welcome children

After four years of marriage, their relationship went through a big change as they welcomed kids into the mix. In 2016, Hathaway and Shulman announced they were expecting their first child, with son Jonathan being born in March of that year.. Three years later, the couple welcomed their second child, son Jack, in 2019.
Throughout the years of their relationship, Hathaway and Shulman have adorably shared their love with the world as Shulman continues to accompany his wife on the red carpet. They’ve shown up at events like the Met Gala, the Golden Globes and several movie premieres. As should be clear by now, Hathaway has been very open about her loving feelings for her husband.
“He walks into a room, and I light up, I can’t help it,” Hathaway shared.
