Meet Chloe Malle: Candice Bergen’s Daughter and Vogue’s New Top Editor— ‘Vogue’s Secret Weapon’
Details about her career, family and personal life—and what Anna Wintour has to say about her successor
Candice Bergen is most famous for her roles in television shows like Murphy Brown and Boston Legal, as well as films such as Miss Congeniality and Bride Wars. But while you may know the star on-screen, you might not know too much about her life behind-the-scenes, including her role as a mother to Chloe Malle.
Malle, is a writer and editor, has been a part of the Vogue team for nearly 15 years. Just today, she was named the new top editor of publication, taking over the coveted role from Anna Wintour, the fashion magazine’s longtime editor-in-chief. Read on for more about Chloe Malle’s personal and professional life.
Chloe Malle’s childhood
Chloe Malle was born on November 8, 1985, to Candice Bergen and her husband at the time, film director and screenwriter Louis Malle. Her parents maintained a long-distance relationship during her early life, with her mother acting in Los Angeles and her father directing films in France. As a result, Malle spent her childhood living in both L.A. and France.
Her father passed away in 1995 when she was 10 years old, after a battle with lymphoma. But before he died, the two shared an incredibly close bond.
“Chloe really established a relationship with her father, which she hadn’t had before because of the separations that we just couldn’t avoid [because of their separate homes],” Bergen told NPR. “She knew that what she should do is take care of her father.”
Chloe Malle’s personal life
Malle met her now-husband, Graham McGrath Albert, in 2009. The couple dated for about four years before tying the knot in 2015 at her family’s country home, Le Coual, France, where she spent much of her childhood.
“I grew up spending every summer there so it made a lot of sense to me to get married there,” Malle shared with Vogue after her wedding. “When I first got engaged, I was overwhelmed by the idea of planning a wedding, but as soon as I started thinking about getting married at Le Coual everything felt so natural and easy to imagine.”
Five years later on May 19, 2020, Malle and Albert welcomed a son, Louis, whom they named after Malle’s late father. On April 1, 2022, the couple welcomed a second child, daughter Alice.
Chloe’s life at Vogue

Today Malle was named Head of Editorial Content for Vogue America and the successor for Anna Wintour. But the new position didn’t come out of the blue. The writer and editor has actually been working for the magazine for nearly 15 years.
Malle joined the publication in 2011 as the social editor, a position she held until 2016, when she became a contributing editor. She held that role for nearly a decade before transitioning to editor of Vogue.com in 2023. Since then, direct traffic to the site has doubled.
“Fashion and media are both evolving at breakneck speed, and I am so thrilled—and awed—to be part of that,” Malle shared about her new position. “I also feel incredibly fortunate to still have Anna just down the hall as my mentor.”
What Anna Wintour says about her successor
“Chloe has long been one of Vogue’s secret weapons when it comes to tracking fashion,” Wintour shared. “But she is not so buried in the industry that she misses the world: Like the best designers, she understands fashion’s big picture, its role shaping not just what’s on the runway but the changing fabric of modern life. Although she is no stranger to the glamour of red carpets, her talent has been for original thinking and hard work.”
Malle added to her statement, “I love the title, I love the content we create, and I love the editors who create it. Vogue has already shaped who I am, now I’m excited at the prospect of shaping Vogue.”
