‘Our Lives Are Magic’: Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill Talk ‘The Life of Chuck’
For one actor, his role really reminded him of his childhood—find out which!
Marvel legend Tom Hiddleston and Star Wars superstar Mark Hamill recently teamed up to bring Stephen King’s 2020 novella The Life of Chuck to life. While they might not share any screen time, they truly shine in their roles as Charles “Chuck” Krantz and Albie Krantz. Woman’s World recently got a chance to attend a press conference with Hiddleston and Hamill, where they talked about their roles, their first time meeting and so much more. Read on to discover what these A-List actors have to say.
Tom Hiddleston reflects on playing Chuck Krantz
In The Life of Chuck, Hiddleston (who millions of moviegoers fell in love with for his portrayal of Loki in various Marvel films) plays the oldest version of Chuck Krantz. During his time on screen, much of his storyline revolves around him dancing in the street with a stranger. It is later revealed that growing up, Chuck fell in love with dance after his grandmother Sarah (Mia Sara) introduced him to it.
“That was the most extraordinary thing, for me, at least,” Hiddleston said. “Trying to accumulate all the dance experience that young Chuck would have had. I have some dance experience, but it’s a little less formal than the Twirlers and Spinners [the dance club young Chuck joins in middle school].”
“I got to do the dancing first. So Benjamin [Pajak, who plays young Chuck] had to dance like me, but he does it better. He did put these little signature moves in, which I had instinctively done unwittingly. And then when I saw the third act, I realized that Benjamin had been watching me very, very closely indeed, to put these extra things in.”

Along with dancing, a huge theme in the film is the idea that people contain multitudes, which the Marvel actor said was one of the reasons he was drawn to the role in the first place.
“It’s true of all of us. None of us is one thing. None of us is the job that we do or the role that we play in our family or who we are in our social circle,” the actor said. “Every human being is an internal world of infinite connections, memories, experiences and possibilities, and we should never submit to the reduction that we’re just one thing. Our lives are magic.”
“Charles Krantz to the external world seems to be the gray man in the gray suit, Mr. Businessman, walking to the business conference with his business briefcase. He’s never going to stop and listen to the music, but actually, inside the soul of this accountant who loves his job, his wife and his son, is this dancer,” Hiddleston continued. “And that might be true of anyone you know or anyone you see on the street. Human beings have greater breadth, depth and range than we could possibly imagine.”
Mark Hamill shares the shocking way he connected to his character
Hamill is a 73-year-old actor best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise. And in The Life of Chuck, he plays Albie Krantz, Chuck’s grandfather, who tries to convince him that he should give up dancing and become an accountant like him.
“It was relatable, because I remember telling my parents what I wanted to do. They said, ‘You’re out of your mind. What are the odds of you [making it]? We don’t know anybody in show business. We don’t know anybody who knows anybody in show business. Get your teacher’s degree.’ So that’s common advice, because the odds are against you,” Hamill said in the press conference.

He also shared that, despite playing grandson and grandfather on screen, he and Hiddleston never met on set.
“I didn’t even meet Tom until the film wrapped at some press thing,” Hamill shared. “I was completely isolated. And it’s only when it all came together that I understood it in stages.”
The actor also shared that he is a huge King fan and recently discovered the author’s 2000 memoir, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, which he said is his new “favorite.”
