Ina Classic Garten’s Breakfast Hasn’t Changed in More Than 10 Years

What do you think Ina Garten’s breakfast is? Something indulgent, like ooey-gooey frosted cinnamon sticky buns, or something quick, like peanut butter and banana pancakes? Maybe you envision her digging into a savory honey bacon eggs benedict. The talented chef could certainly whip up whatever her heart desires, but she usually goes for something a lot simpler: oatmeal.

“I have the same thing for breakfast every single day, 365 days a year: McCann’s Irish oatmeal,” ($11.49, Amazon) she told Bon Appétit. “It’s actually quick-cooking, and I do it in the microwave with milk and salt. Most people don’t do their oatmeal with salt, and I think that without it, it just tastes like wallpaper paste. With salt, I think it’s delicious.”

So, the next time you glumly shovel lumpy oats in your mouth, dreaming of creamy scrambled eggs and fluffy pancakes, just remember that it’s good enough for the Barefoot Contessa — which means it’s probably good enough for you. (Just don’t forget the milk and salt next time!) We also love that Garten makes her oatmeal in the microwave, just like the rest of us.

If you still despise plain oatmeal, we recommend adding fruit or a dash of syrup, like Garten does. “If it’s my birthday, I’ll put maple syrup in it — but only on my birthday.”

Garten’s fuss-free approach to breakfast also extends to her coffee preferences. “For coffee I either make an espresso or a pot of coffee — depending on my mood. The coffee I drink is from a company called Dallis Brothers. I take it with milk, no sweetener. I find sugar in coffee to be bitter, ironically.”

Once Garten’s fueled her body, she likes to go for a leisurely stroll. “After breakfast, I always go for a walk on the beach from 8 to 9. It’s a great way to start the day. I listen to music and take a walk, and then at 9 o’clock, I meet my team at the barn, which is 100 yards from my house, and we decide what we’re going to do that day.”
