Iconic General Hospital actress Leslie Charleson died on January 12, 2025, at age 79.  Her passing was confirmed by the General Hospital Instagram account, with the caption written by Frank Valentini.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson,” it read.

“Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone and just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew. I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit and incredible presence on set. On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her loved ones during this difficult time.”

Her cause of death has yet to be announced.

Honoring Leslie Charleson’s legacy in the soap opera world and her 50-year contribution to General Hospital, we look back at where she came from and how she got to where she was before her passing. Keep scrolling for more.

Leslie Charleson’s early life and first steps in acting

Charleson was born on February 22, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo., and began acting in 1964. From there, she continued to climb, landing her first leading role on the hit show Love Is a Many Splendored Thing in 1967.

She played a character named Iris Donnelly and remained there until 1973 and starred in 1,427 episodes in total.

Following that, Charleson claimed that she “never intended to work on another soap opera.”

But then someone special came along and changed her mind.

Tom Donovan, who I adored and who I had worked with on that soap, had asked to meet with him and he ultimately charmed me into taking the role of Monica. I had never seen a single episode of General Hospital at that time, but Tom assured me that it was a great fit.”

And it was! In 1977, Charleson joined the General Hospital cast as Dr. Monica Quartermaine and remained there until 2023.

How Leslie Charleson became a ‘General Hospital’ icon

Upon joining General Hospital in 1977, Charleson claimed that despite her previous experience, she was quite nervous and unprepared, and the news circulating around the world at the time didn’t help.

“I remember my first day on the show was the same day that Elvis Presley died, and I was a big Elvis fan,” the actress said in 2020. “I could never have envisioned the impact that this job would have on my life.

“Things have changed over the years, from the pace and timing when shooting a scene, to the amount of interaction with other cast-mates, to the inescapable impact of social media. I feel a bit sorry for the younger cast members that they do not get to experience it quite the same way I have. As I look back 43 years later, I am so grateful for all the amazing experiences and friendships.”

With 2,097 episodes, Leslie Charleson holds the record as General Hospital’s longest-tenured cast member. It was also the last project she worked on before her death.

“I really do love this job,” she said in 2001. “Look at it this way — what better job can you do than get up in the morning, roll out of bed, throw something on and then have someone take care of how you look and how you dress and what you say? How much more grateful could you possibly be? Not bad, not bad at all.”

Other roles in Leslie Charleson’s acting career

Outside of General Hospital and Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, Charleson also appeared in Cannon (1972 to 1975), Kung Fu (1975), Port Charles (1997 to 2001) and General Hospital: Night Shift (2008).

She also played herself in an episode of Friends alongside Donny Osmond.

Charleson had one sister named Kate growing up. She was also an actress but sadly died from suicide in 1996.

“My sister was bipolar,” Charleson said in 2022. “It was a tough time because we didn’t really know what it was about.”

Charleson also opened up about the day her sister died, saying, “Something in her tone… She said she was so tired and to take care of her cats. And it wasn’t my fault.

“I got out of work early. She had an apartment right here [in Los Angeles]. I went over and she didn’t answer. But she was on the first floor. I went over to her window, and she had hung herself. She was only 43.”

Aside from her sister, Charleson was married to Bill Demms from 1988 until 1991. The reason for their split still remains unclear, and the couple had no children.

May Leslie Charleson rest in peace.
