Loretta Lynn’s Granddaughter Emmy Russell Shares Baby Taylor’s Health Scare and ‘Miracle’ Update
Get to know the country music royal and 'American Idol' alum who got hopeful news about her baby’s health
Loretta Lynn left her mark on the country music world with iconic hits like “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “You’re Looking at Country” and “This Haunted House,” and since her passing in 2022, her family have carried on her musical legacy. While a few of her children have made their mark on the country genre, her granddaughter, Emmy Russell, found mainstream recognition after a successful run on the reality competition series American Idol, but these days, Russell has made headlines for a different reason. Emmy, who is married to fellow musician Tyler Ward, has a daughter, Taylor, and in the last few days, shared to social media that the baby had been showing concerning signs, resulting in a visit to the hospital.
“Taylor has been fussy and crying for the last few days and we assumed it was teething…but this morning Tyler noticed small spasms,” Emmy explained in the caption of her Instagram post. “We filmed it and rushed to the doctor. They confirmed it could be small seizures and asked us to stay overnight for testing.”

Tests done in the hospital confirmed that Taylor had been diagnosed with infantile spasms, which, as stated in their video announcing the update, affects 0.02% of babies. In a separate video, the couple shared that Taylor’s MRI didn’t reveal anything alarming. “The whole team of six came in and said they didn’t see anything, but the radiologist had to look at the charts again,” said Ward. “Three hours later, the radiologist came in and said everything looks normal. There is one concern, and we will go into details of that at some point, but for the most part, we got to take Taylor home. She has two weeks of medication and then the follow-up. So, in two weeks we’ll know for sure, but as of now, it’s a miracle.”
Who is Emmy Russell?
Emmy Russell followed in her grandmother’s footsteps and showed the world her talent when she appeared on Season 22 of American Idol, prepared to forge her own path as a musician. Her country charm is reminiscent of her late grandmother’s, but when it comes down to it, she wants to be her own person. While competing on American Idol, Russell performed a rendition of her grandmother’s hit, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” but it wasn’t her first choice.

“So on American Idol, I did my grandma’s song. Well, they actually let the judges pick three songs. And the only one I knew was ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter,’” she said on The Thrivalist Podcast with Jamie George. “I’m already facing so much, trying to act in courage, and I just remember seeing that and I was so mad. I was like, ‘Ugh.’”
While we love seeing Emmy carry on the torch, she isn’t the first in her family to continue Loretta Lynn’s legacy!
Loretta Lynn’s musical family
Loretta welcomed six children during her life, and almost all of them dipped their toes in the music world. Her eldest, Betty Sue Lynn, helped write the lyrics to some of Loretta’s songs over the years. Clara Marie “Cissie” Lynn also enjoyed a career in the music industry, as well as her son Ernest, and daughters Peggy and Patsy, who comprised the country duo, The Lynns. With 26 grandchildren, Emmy isn’t the only musician either! Tayla Lynn, Ernest’s daughter, also enjoys a career in music.
