Key Takeaways

  • 'Y&R' star Melody Thomas Scott has been married to the soap's producer since 1985.
  • Melody had two brief marriages before settling down with Edward J. Scott.
  • While 'Y&R' is integral to her love story, Melody says there's far more to her long marriage.

Melody Thomas Scott has long been one of the most recognizable faces in daytime TV. The actress has played Nikki Newman on The Young and the Restless since she was 23 in 1979, and over the decades, the character has gone from a bad girl with a rough background to a strong, mature woman—and along the way, she’s racked up enough marriages to give Elizabeth Taylor a run for her money.

Nikki infamously married, divorced and remarried powerful businessman Victor Newman (played by Eric Braeden) multiple times, and they’ve been a soap opera supercouple (known by fans as “Niktor”) since the ’80s. Offscreen, Melody is half of a real-life supercouple, as she’s been married to The Young and the Restless producer Edward J. Scott since 1985. With the soap star celebrating her 70th birthday on April 18, we’re taking a look at her long marriage and what she’s said about working with her husband.

Melody Thomas Scott’s early marriages and first ‘Y&R’ romance

In 1979, shortly before Melody Thomas joined the cast of The Young and the Restless, she was married to Lindy Davis, whom she’d known for her whole life, and whom, like her, started as a child actor. The marriage lasted just six months. Soon after her divorce, Melody caused some real-life soapy drama when she married Bob Shield, Lindy’s close friend and the officiant of their wedding. That marriage was similarly short-lived, and it too ended after six months.

Before finding lasting love with Scott, the two-time divorcée dated The Young and the Restless makeup artist Carlos Yeaggy and their daughter, Alexandra, now a fashion designer, was born in 1982. Melody’s pregnancy was written into the show, and the plotline became a fan favorite.

Finding unexpected love on the set of ‘The Young and the Restless’

Melody Thomas had already been through her share of romantic ups and downs before she started her relationship with Edward J. Scott. Scott began working as a producer on The Young and the Restless in 1976, just three years after the soap debuted and before Melody became part of the show, and when they met, it wasn’t love at first sight.

Which soap opera is your favorite?

In her 2020 memoir Always Young and Restless: My Life On and Off America’s #1 Daytime Drama, the actress amusingly recalled, “Here’s the thing about Edward Scott: from the first moment we met, we didn’t exactly mesh. There wasn’t any sort of on-set controversy. It was more like I didn’t care for him and he didn’t care for me. For whatever reason, whenever he came or went, I was just . . . ‘Eh. Ed.’ That all changed. Obviously.”

After a few years on the soap, Melody got to know Ed better, and she found herself drawn to his sense of humor and down-to-earth nature. They went on their first date in 1983 and married in 1985. Their daughter, Elizabeth, now an actress, was born in 1988, and Melody’s pregnancy was once again written into the show.

How Melody Thomas Scott and Edward J. Scott have made their marriage last

The Scotts have now been married for over 40 years, and Melody has been on The Young and the Restless for the whole time they’ve been a couple. Edward left the show to work on The Days of Our Lives from 2007 to 2008, and he then became a producer on The Bold and the Beautiful from 2010 to 2024. After leaving B&B, he returned to Y&R for a brief period before retiring, and Melody was excited to have him back, telling People, “It’s just like old times. For so many decades, he was here, and that’s how we met, so it’s like all home week.”

In a 1995 Soap Opera Digest interview, Melody shared her marriage advice, saying, “It’s swallowing your pride about something if it makes your partner feel better. It’s hard sometimes, but I very firmly believe that when you write down a list of priorities, your mate should be No. 1, because a family is based on the bond between the parents.” More than 30 years later, that advice is clearly still working.

Throughout their marriage, Melody and Edward Scott have gracefully integrated their personal and professional lives—something that isn’t always easy to do, especially in Hollywood. In 2005, at the behest of their soap’s network, CBS, they even renewed their vows as part of a primetime TV special. She admitted they found this “somewhat silly” in her memoir, but said, “Despite our reluctance, it was very special to declare, once again, that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives with one another.”

In 2024, Melody and Edward both won Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Daytime Emmys, and on the red carpet, Edward said that their marriage is the biggest achievement of all. It’s impossible to tell their love story without The Young and the Restless, but as Melody sweetly put it in her memoir, “My relationship with Edward has never been about Y&R. It’s about partnership and family. It’s about a genuine bond of love.”
