Gilbert’s connection with the Landons began when she was cast as Laura Ingalls opposite Michael Landon’s Charles “Pa” Ingalls. She has often said there was an immediate connection between them, recalling that it was unlike anything she had ever experienced in an audition.
Their relationship quickly grew beyond that of co-stars.
The actress shared that their connection was instant. She explained in an interview that their connection was something she “never experienced in an audition room” and that “it was special and it was instant.”
Portraying father and daughter on screen certainly allows actors to become close, but for Gilbert and Landon, it was more than just a friendship between co-stars.
“Michael Landon was like a father figure to many of us, obviously, and a very, very important influence in my life,” Gilbert shared during the show’s 50th anniversary cast reunion. “My own father passed away when I was 11. And I had been working with Michael for two years at that point, and he really sort of stepped in and kind of watched over me in a much more paternal way.”

As Gilbert spent more time with Michael Landon’s family, she naturally grew close to his children as well. One in particular—Michael Landon Jr.—became one of her closest friends. Since they were the same age, the two spent much of their time together, despite Landon having eight other children.
“We grew up together,” Gilbert shared. “And then, on top of it, we socialized together when I wasn’t working. Our families were close. We vacationed together every spring to Hawaii…there was always something fabulously fun going on.”
Their close friendship eventually blossomed into a brief romance in 1979. Gilbert and Landon Jr. famously attended prom together and made several public appearances as a couple. Although they ended their relationship in 1980, the two have remained close friends over the years.
Melissa Gilbert joined ‘When Calls the Heart’
The beloved series, When Calls the Heart, was created by Michael Landon Jr. in 2014 and is often compared to Little House “for its charming and compelling stories of hope, human connection and frontier survival.” So it was no surprise when Melissa Gilbert booked a role on the show in 2024 as Georgie McGill.
“We’ve been friends for 50-some-odd years, and I adore him, I adore his family…” Gilbert said. “It’s just so nice to be back in an environment where I feel completely protected, appreciated, and loved.”
Gilbert only appeared in seven episodes of the series throughout 2025 and 2026, but her character quickly became a fan-favorite. However, the actress has recently shared that she won’t be returning for the 14th season.
“Many people have asked if I will be returning to When Calls the Heart this coming season,” Gilbert shared in an Instagram post. “The answer to that is no I will not. I am told this is due to ‘budget issues.'”
Gilbert wrote in the caption of the post, “I will be eternally grateful to my dear friend Michael Landon Jr. for giving me the chance to bring Georgie McGill to life. It was a lovely couple of seasons but it’s time to say farewell. When one door closes, another one opens. Looking forward to whatever comes next.”
