From George Reeves to Christopher Reeve, Henry Cavill and more, these are their loves

TOP STORIES

When it comes to playing Superman, there’s something about the role that seems larger than life—strength, honor, charm and that ever-present sense of responsibility. But behind the capes and iconic curls are real men navigating real relationships, with all the joy, heartache and complexity that come with them. Whether they voiced the character in the Golden Age of radio or flew across the big screen in modern blockbusters, each Superman actor has lived a love story of his own—some lasting decades while others burned brightly and faded fast.

What follows is a closer look at the romantic lives of the actors who have portrayed the Man of Steel—from Bud Collyer’s quiet devotion and Kirk Alyn’s Hollywood marriage to George Reeves’ tangled and ultimately tragic relationships. There’s Christopher Reeve, whose personal life was filled with dramatic highs and heartbreaking lows, and Dean Cain, whose time in the spotlight often intersected with his high-profile romances. Some, like Tim Daly and Tom Welling, have experienced love in the public eye through long-term marriages and new beginnings. Others, like Brandon Routh and Tyler Hoechlin, have kept a lower profile while still building meaningful connections.

And then there’s Henry Cavill, whose love life has been as much a subject of internet buzz as his superhero physique, as well as David Corenswet, the newest actor to step into the red and blue tights, whose private life remains largely under wraps—but certainly piques curiosity as his star continues to rise.

What’s clear across the decades is that while Superman may be bulletproof, the actors who portray him are as human as the rest of us. Their relationships have been shaped by fame, pressure, personal growth and the demands of careers spent under the microscope. Some have found lasting love, others have weathered public splits, and many have built families while juggling the expectations that come with being one of pop culture’s most enduring icons.

Bud Collyer

Bud Collyer—born Clayton Johnson Heermance Jr. on June 18, 1908—was the very first actor to bring Superman to life, though only with his voice. He debuted as the Man of Steel on The Adventures of Superman radio show, which ran from 1940 to 1951. But he didn’t stop there: Collyer also voiced the character in 17 theatrical animated shorts during the 1940s, produced by Max and Dave Fleischer (and later Famous Studios), and returned to the role in the Saturday morning cartoon The New Adventures of Superman, which aired from 1966 to 1970.

Off the mic, Collyer married Heloise Law Green on April 17, 1936, in New York City. She was born in Georgia in 1914 to Newman Law Green and Eloise Perry Robinson. The couple had three children—Cynthia, Patricia, and Michael—before divorcing in 1946. A few years later, in 1953, Heloise remarried a man named Donald Clifford Heath and eventually passed away in Alabama in 1972.

That same year—1946—Collyer married again, this time to actress Marian Shockley. The two stayed together until Collyer’s death in 1969 at the age of 61. Shockley had a notable career of her own in the 1930s and was best known for playing Nikki Porter on the radio series The Adventures of Ellery Queen. She stepped away from acting in 1955 and passed away in Los Angeles on December 14, 1981, at the age of 73.

Kirk Alyn—born John Feggo Jr. on October 8, 1910—earned his place in pop culture history as the first actor to play Superman in live-action. He donned the cape in the 1948 movie serial Superman, and returned for its 1950 follow-up, Atom Man vs. Superman.

Back in 1942, Alyn married actress and singer Virginia O’Brien, who was known for her signature deadpan style in a string of popular MGM musicals during the 1940s. She stayed active in show business over the years, making appearances in film, television and on stage. O’Brien passed away on January 16, 2001, at age 81, while Alyn had died two years earlier, on March 14, 1999, at the age of 88.

Together, they had three children: daughters Terri O’Brien and Elizabeth Watkins, and a son, John Feggo III. Their marriage lasted until 1955, when the couple divorced.

George Reeves, who was born on January 5, 1914 and is best known for starring in the 1950s television series Adventures of Superman, had a complex personal life involving several significant relationships.Reeves married actress Ellanora Needles on September 22, 1940, in San Gabriel, California. The couple met while studying acting at the Pasadena Playhouse and their marriage lasted a decade, ending in divorce in 1950. They did not have any children.

Jim Nolt, webmaster at The Adventures Continue, explains, “I spoke to Ellanora several times and she had nothing but positive things to say about George—practically to the level of praising him. By all accounts, they had a good marriage for most of the years they were together, but according to Ellanora, she left him when they lost some money on an investment and someone richer came along and ‘swept me off my feet.’ She was not proud of that, but those were her words. George was deeply hurt and preferred not to talk about Ellanora after that.”

George Reeves and Toni Mannix

In 1951, Reeves began a relationship with Toni Mannix, a former Ziegfeld Follies dancer and the wife of MGM executive Eddie Mannix (the latter was also rumored to have had ties to the mob). Their affair was reportedly conducted with Eddie Mannix’s knowledge and tacit approval. Toni, it should be noted, was known for her generosity towards Reeves, providing him with financial support and gifts.

The relationship between Reeves and Mannix lasted several years, but ended in 1958 when Reeves became involved with another woman, Leonore Lemmon. Mannix was reportedly devastated by the breakup and remained emotionally attached to Reeves until her death.

After ending his relationship with Toni Mannix, Reeves became engaged to Leonore Lemmon, a New York socialite known for her lively personality. The couple planned to marry in June 1959. Tragically, Reeves died from a gunshot wound to the head on June 16, 1959, shortly before the planned wedding. His death was officially ruled a suicide, but the circumstances surrounding it have led to ongoing speculation and conspiracy theories. The complex relationships in Reeves’s life, particularly with Toni Mannix and Leonore Lemmon, have been the subject of much discussion and were dramatized in the 2006 film Hollywoodland.

Christopher Reeve and Gae Exton

Christopher Reeve made his unforgettable debut as the Man of Steel in Superman: The Movie back in 1978. Born on September 25, 1952, Reeve brought such charm, strength, and sincerity to the role that he’s still considered the gold standard—every actor who’s worn the cape since has inevitably been compared to him.

Around the same time he was becoming a household name, Reeve began a relationship with Gae Exton, a British modeling executive. They met during the filming of Superman in England and quickly hit it off. Though they never married, their relationship lasted nearly a decade and was a significant part of Reeve’s life. Their relationship, though never formalized by marriage, resulted in the birth of two children: Matthew Exton Reeve, born on December 20, 1979, and Alexandra Exton Reeve, born on November 25, 1983.

Like many long-term relationships under the spotlight, theirs had its ups and downs. At one point, during a brief separation, Reeve began seeing actress Jane Seymour while filming Somewhere in Time. But when he found out Exton was pregnant with their first child, he ended the romance with Seymour to be there for his family.

By 1987, Reeve and Exton decided to part ways for good, but they did so amicably. They agreed to joint custody, with Reeve returning to New York and Exton continuing to raise their children in London. Even after the split, they remained on good terms and focused on co-parenting.

Years later, Exton opened up about their relationship in the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, offering a rare glimpse into their shared history and the challenges they faced. Their son Matthew publicly praised her for her courage and honesty, shedding light on the emotional complexity of their family’s journey.

Christopher Reeve met Dana Morosini in June 1987 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts—he was acting in a play while she was performing in a cabaret. At first, Morosini was understandably cautious—Reeve had just come out of a long relationship with Gae Exton, and she wasn’t sure if she could fully trust him. Reeve, for his part, was a bit wary of marriage, shaped by his parents’ divorce. But as they spent more time together, their connection deepened.

Eventually, love won out. On April 11, 1992, they wed in a beautiful outdoor ceremony in South Williamstown, Massachusetts. Just two months later, their son, Will Reeve, was born on June 7, 1992. Their bond was strong, not just as partners but as a family. After Reeve’s death in 2004, Dana picked up the torch, continuing their advocacy work until her own heartbreaking death from lung cancer in March 2006.

Today, their son Will has followed a path of his own, working as a journalist and proudly serving on the board of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. Through his efforts, and those of the foundation, his parents’ legacy of compassion, strength and service lives on.

That legacy was forged in part through unimaginable hardship. On May 27, 1995, Christopher Reeve suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury during an equestrian event that left him paralyzed from the neck down. In the difficult days that followed, he confessed to Dana that he didn’t want to go on—that he felt like a burden. Her response changed everything. “You’re still you, and I love you,” she told him—words he later said saved his life.

From that moment forward, Dana became his rock. She took on the role of primary caregiver, overseeing his medical care and providing unwavering emotional support. Together, they founded what became the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, dedicating themselves to advancing spinal cord research and improving the lives of people living with paralysis. Their partnership—built on love, resilience, and shared purpose—continues to inspire.

Dean Cain and Brooke Shields

Dean Cain—who starred with Teri Hatcher in the TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman—and Brooke Shields had a meaningful relationship during their time at Princeton University in the 1980s. They were young, in love, and genuinely connected—but their relationship was also shaped by the baggage of fame and the complicated world she had grown up in.

Shields had been in the spotlight since she was a child, thanks to high-profile (and often controversial) roles in films like Pretty Baby and The Blue Lagoon. Additionally, her mother’s strict control over her life and public image led to Shields being widely known as “the most famous virgin in the world.” That label, and all the expectations that came with it, made navigating an intimate relationship especially difficult.

In both her memoir There Was a Little Girl and the documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, she opens up about how all of this impacted her relationship with Cain. Shields describes their first time together as deeply emotional—but also overwhelming. She ended up running out of the room, panicked, torn between what she wanted and the fear of letting down her mother or her fans.

Looking back, she has expressed regret over not allowing herself to fully embrace their love. In a later interview, she apologized to Cain, saying she wished she’d made things easier for him while acknowledging that he had been “loyal and loving,” even when things were complicated.

In the early 1990s, Dean Cain and Gabrielle Reece were a high-profile couple, each making waves in their own world—he was gaining national attention as the star of Lois & Clark, while she was a standout professional volleyball player and a sought-after model.

Their relationship unfolded just as his fame was skyrocketing, which led to plenty of tabloid chatter linking him to various women. But in a 1995 interview with TV Guide, Cain set the record straight. “I am the most fiercely monogamous person there is,” he said. “I’ve been with Gab for over a year, and she gets so ticked reading that all these different girls are linked with me.”

Despite their strong connection and public affection for one another, the relationship eventually ran its course. Details about their breakup have remained private, but both moved on to new chapters in their lives. Gabrielle married professional surfer Laird Hamilton, the duo becoming the parents of two daughters.

Dean Cain and Mindy McCready

Dean Cain and country singer Mindy McCready made headlines when they got engaged in 1997. At the time, he was well-known for his role as Superman and she was one of country music’s rising stars. Their engagement lasted about a year before they called it off in 1998.

After the breakup, Cain cut ties completely—especially once he became a father. He said he couldn’t risk having someone like McCready around his son, calling her “poisonous” and someone he simply didn’t want in his life.

Sadly, McCready’s years after their split were filled with personal struggles. She dealt with legal troubles, multiple suicide attempts and ongoing mental health battles. In 2013, she tragically died by suicide, and while Cain expressed sorrow over her passing, he admitted he wasn’t shocked.

In the late 1990s, Dean Cain was in a relationship with Spanish model and actress Samantha Torres. Torres had made a name for herself in the modeling world—she was Playboy’s Playmate of the Month in December 1995—and also represented Spain in international beauty pageants. Their relationship eventually led to the birth of their son, Christopher Dean Cain, on June 11, 2000.

Although Dean and Samantha split up before Christopher was born, they initially agreed to share joint custody starting in 2003. That changed in 2011, when Cain was awarded sole custody in an effort to give his son more stability. For him, being a father wasn’t something he took lightly—he’s often talked about how deeply it changed his life. At one point, he even turned down a high-paying TV role so he could focus on raising Christopher, who would go on to graduate from High Point University in 2023.

Yes, Tim Daly absolutely played Superman—well, he voiced him, bringing the character to life in the beloved Superman: The Animated Series in the 1990s, a performance that many fans still hold as one of the best portrayals of the Man of Steel.

Off-screen, Daly was married to actress Amy Van Nostrand for 28 years. They tied the knot in 1982 and had two children together: Sam Daly, born in 1984, who followed in his dad’s footsteps into acting (even voicing Superman), and Emelyn Daly, born in 1989. Van Nostrand built a solid career of her own, performing on Broadway in plays like The Hothouse, and appearing on TV shows like Frasier and Law & Order. The couple divorced in 2010.

Tim Daly and Téa Leoni began their relationship in 2014 after meeting on the set of the CBS political drama Madam Secretary, where they portrayed the married couple Elizabeth and Henry McCord. Their on-screen chemistry quickly translated into a real-life romance, which was confirmed later that year. The couple made their public debut at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April 2015.

Both Daly and Leoni had previously been married (her ex-husband is X-Files sta rDavid Duchovny, with whom she shares two children). Unfortunately, after nearly a decade together, reports emerged in 2025 that they had amicably ended their relationship.

Tom Welling and Jamie White shared a meaningful chapter of their lives together, starting back in 1998 when they first met. After several years of dating, they wed on July 5, 2002, in a picturesque ceremony on Martha’s Vineyard.

For much of their marriage, the couple lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, while Welling was busy playing Clark Kent (on the road to becoming Superman) on Smallville. In 2011 they made the move to Los Angeles. Although they didn’t have any children, they spent over a decade building a life together.

Things eventually came to an end in October 2013 when she filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The process took a couple of years, with the divorce being finalized in November 2015.

Lee, an accomplished equestrian and entrepreneur, launched her lifestyle brand Saddle Club in 2016—blending her passion for riding with fashion and design.

Their wedding, held at Sunstone Vineyards & Winery in Santa Ynez, California, had a charming cowboy-inspired vibe that reflected their mutual love of the outdoors. Since then, they’ve built a beautiful life together, raising sons Thomson Wylde, born on January 5, 2019, and Rocklin Von, born on June 3, 2021.

Lee frequently shares moments from their family life on social media, painting a picture of a tight-knit, nature-loving group. Henry Cavill, who made his debut as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, was previously engaged to British show jumper Ellen Whitaker. The couple met in 2009 at the Olympia Horse Show, where she was competing. As their relationship progressed, Cavill proposed in May 2011 during a trip to Hollywood.

Despite their engagement, the couple parted ways the following year. There was no statement regarding the split, though it was ultimately chalked up to their careers and the challenges of maintaining a long-distance relationship.

Henry Cavill has been in a relationship with Hollywood executive Natalie Viscuso since early 2021. They went public in April of that year with a charming Instagram post showing the two of them playing chess—Henry referred to her as his “beautiful and brilliant love,” giving fans a rare glimpse into his personal life.

Natalie is no stranger to the entertainment world. She’s currently the Vice President at Vertigo Entertainment, the production company behind hits like The LEGO Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s. Before that, she worked at Legendary Entertainment—the same studio that produced Man of Steel and Enola Holmes, two of Henry’s major films. It’s likely that’s where their paths first crossed.

Their relationship hasn’t just been personal—it’s turned into a creative partnership as well. They’ve teamed up on a live-action adaptation of Warhammer 40,000, with Henry set to star and produce, and Viscuso involved through her role at Vertigo.

In April 2024, there was some exciting news: he and Natalie were expecting their first child. Later that year, they welcomed their baby, and were seen together as a family in Australia, where Henry was working on a new project.
