‘He Was Really, Really the Love of My Life’: Inside Susan Lucci and Helmut Huber’s 53-Year Romance
Susan Lucci broke off an engagement to be with Helmut Huber at 23 and never looked back
Their love story was one for the ages and it’s one that began as a whirlwind romance—that ended up lasting for over fifty years. The All My Children star Susan Lucci and her husband, Helmut Huber, had one of those relationships everyone longs for, and it was love at first sight for the couple. From a summer love to a long-lasting marriage, delve into the relationship between Lucci and Huber and learn why they were each other’s soulmates.
How Susan Lucci met her husband Helmut Huber
Their romance began in 1969, when Lucci was 23 and Huber was 32, and they immediately fell for each other. Both were working at Long Island’s Garden City Hotel—he was the executive chef and she was working while on summer vacation from college.
“I asked one of my friends, I said, ‘Who is that?’” Lucci explained in an interview. “And she said, ‘He’s your boss, stupid.’”
Because of their nine-year age difference, Lucci didn’t consider Huber as a romantic partner right away and she even got engaged to another man in the meantime. Lucci’s parents held their engagement party at the hotel where she’d met Huber, which is how they were able to reconnect.

“I was thinking at the time that he was much more attractive than I even knew, and I shouldn’t be feeling like that,” Lucci explained of how she felt about Huber while at her engagement party. “Something is wrong with this picture. But I didn’t know what to do with it.”
Lucci eventually ended her engagement not long after the party and she embarked on a relationship with Huber. Their love blossomed quickly, and they became engaged in just three months. They married on September 13, 1969, and were happily married for over fifty years.
Lucci and Huber expand their family

Lucci and Huber enjoyed the newlywed life for a few years before welcoming children of their own. On February 22, 1975, they had their first child, daughter Liza Huber, who eventually followed in her mother’s footsteps in acting. Liza landed a slot on the daytime drama, Passions, from 1999 until 2008.
In 2004, Liza reconnected with an old classmate, Alexander Hesterberg III, and the two eventually married, welcoming four children—Royce, Brendan, Hayden and Mason—and making Lucci and Huber grandparents.
Over a decade later, the couple had a second child together, son Andreas Huber, in 1987. Unlike his older sister, Andreas stayed out of the spotlight, choosing to work for the Canadian PGA Tour and European Challenge Tour. He married Courtney Velasco in 2016, and they have one child, son Wolf, together.
Helmut Huber’s touching words about loving Susan Lucci

Throughout their 53-year marriage, the couple remained as in love as they were when they first began dating. They often shared sweet words for one another, whether in separate interviews or while sitting right next to one another.
“I feel so lucky too that Helmut is so secure, and I always look to him because he’s very smart,” Lucci says of her husband. “I’m not even gonna say supportive, it’s so beyond that. It’s involved, it’s hands-on, really there for me.”
Huber’s responded with, “And to love somebody like that, that doesn’t happen that often. And if it does happen, it’s the most wonderful thing in the world.”
How Susan Lucci is coping with her husband’s death

Sadly, in 2022, Lucci lost her husband to a stroke. Huber was 84 years old.
“Frankly, when my husband passed away, I couldn’t even remember what I loved to do, nothing else mattered,” she explained. “It still feels very fresh and unbelievable. He was a larger-than-life presence with a big personality. Smart and strong. I miss him so much.”
She said later, “He’s worth missing. He was really, really the love of my life.”
