Owning your favorite musician’s glassware and furniture might feel like “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” but Tom Petty’s wife Dana York’s recent estate sale made this wish a reality.

When it comes to rock ‘n’ roll, very few musicians have had the same impact as Tom Petty. Over the course of his career, Petty sold 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. His list of hits includes “American Girl,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “Breakdown”.

Inside Tom Petty’s Malibu estate sale

Petty’s music is the American soundtrack and after his death in 2017, fans across the nation were heartbroken. It’s no surprise that so many people jumped at the opportunity to buy some of his belongings and catch a glimpse of the personal life that few witnessed.

The sale was held last weekend out of the late musician’s pad in Malibu, California. Petty and York called the historic, Mediterranean-style abode home for almost 20 years before his passing. The couple bought the house in 1998 and hosted holiday parties, Heartbreakers hangouts, and even their wedding ceremony at the estate. The property was listed for $19 million in July 2024, according to The New York Post.

With the help of Handled, a company specializing in estate organization and sales, York hosted the event Friday, May 30th, through Sunday, June 1st. The sale was open to the public and attended by historians, fans and antique connoisseurs. There was a long line of enthusiastic shoppers waiting to get into the home when the sale began on Friday morning, according to CBS. Early bird tickets were sold before the event for those hoping to skip the lines and get first dibs on the mementos.

What was for sale—and what wasn’t

None of Petty’s guitars or gold records were up for grabs, but attendees had the opportunity to bring home other intimate belongings used by the musician and his wife. The estate was filled with priced rugs, paintings, books, photographs and furniture.

Some shoppers took to social media to share videos from inside the home and noted their surprise at the items’ reasonable prices. “Honestly, things were not that much higher than any other L.A. estate sale that I’ve been to,” said Aubrey Little on TikTok. Her video showed bath towels priced at $10 each and sheet sets for $20. A pair of yellow, velvet sofas were also for sale and marked at $3,500 each, according to Yahoo! Life.

The chance to take home a casserole dish or ottoman used by the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is a marvel, but some attendees said that walking around the home of such an influential musician was the real highlight of the day. “His house was gorgeous. It truly was special just to be there,” said Amanda–@mandybar9–in a TikTok video about the event.

Fans strolled from room to room, catching a peek into the life Petty and his wife so lovingly curated. Christmas decorations, worn books and photos of the couple throughout their love story decorated the estate, painting a picture of what Petty’s more intimate moments looked like.

Petty’s music will be cherished in homes around the country for decades to come, and now, so will his belongings.
