From sitcoms to sci-fi, see the TV icon's remarkable seven-decade career in photos
Elinor Donahue’s career is like flipping through a scrapbook of TV’s greatest hits. She began her career on the big screen in the early 1940s, already radiating the charm and professionalism that would become her trademark. By the mid-’50s, she was a household name as Betty Anderson on Father Knows Best, the relatable big sister who felt like part of your own family.
From there, she seemed to be everywhere. The ’60s brought turns in The Andy Griffith Show, Dr. Kildare, Many Happy Returns and even the whimsical The Flying Nun. Whether it was comedy, drama or romance, Donahue moved between them with ease.
In the ’70s and ’80s, she kept audiences on their toes with a mix of ensemble work, soap opera intrigue and fan-favorite guest spots. She starred in Mulligan’s Stew, joined Days of Our Lives and popped up in Diff’rent Strokes. She even ventured into sci-fi with a memorable Star Trek appearance, earning a whole new wave of fans.
Her later work proved just as varied, mixing laughs on Friends, period drama on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and even a dip into horror with Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare.
