10 ‘Gilligan’s Island’ Guest Stars You Forgot About— From Kurt Russell to Don Rickles
Think it would be impossible to invite guest stars to a deserted isle? Think again
When you consider that Gilligan’s Island is built on the premise of seven stranded castaways completely cut off from the outside world, you might not think it had any room for guest stars—yet, it did. In fact, it was somehow so much easier for outside characters to drop by and depart than for any of the regulars to leave that island.
Those series regulars, of course, include Bob Denver as the well-meaning but disastrous Gilligan, Alan Hale Jr‘s jolly Skipper, Jim Backus and Natalie Schafer as the Howells, Tina Louise as movie star Ginger Grant, Russell Johnson as the Professor and Dawn Wells as Mary Ann. Together, they formed one of classic TV’s most enduring ensembles, yet part of Gilligan’s Island‘s goofy charm came from the occasional disruption of their isolated paradise by unexpected visitors. And some of them were played by a surprising lineup of pop culture visitors, each adding their own comic flair into the mix.
Take Hans Conried, who popped up not once but twice as Wrongway Feldman, the eccentric aviator who’d rather stay stranded than face the modern world. Then there was Zsa Zsa Gabor, playing a high-society dame with designs on turning the island into a private resort. Vito Scotti took versatility to another level, portraying multiple characters—from a mad scientist to a confused samurai—with the same over-the-top energy that made him a favorite among 1960s TV casting directors.
Western movie heartthrob Rory Calhoun gave Mrs. Howell a flutter or two as a debonair suitor, while insult comic Don Rickles played a stranded con man. Disney legend Sterling Holloway brought his trademark whimsy to a “pigeon collector” role, and a young Kurt Russell stole the show as a jungle boy. Phil Silvers made a scene—literally—as a blustering Broadway producer who discovers a Shakespearean Hamlet musical staged by the castaways, and Strother Martin gave us his best mad scientist sidekick performance alongside one of the show’s wildest plots. Even F Troop regular Larry Storch stopped by as a bank robber on the run.
Whether they were dropping in by boat, plane, balloon—or bizarre coincidence—these guest stars provided Gilligan’s Island and its fans some of its most unforgettable moments.
1. Hans Conried

Role: Wrongway Feldman
Best known for: Voice of Captain Hook in Disney’s Peter Pan, Professor Kropotkin in My Friend Irma and countless radio and television roles
Episodes: “Wrongway Feldman” (Season 1, Episode 5), “The Return of Wrongway Feldman” (Season 1, Episode 24)
Role: Hans Conried appeared twice as Wrongway Feldman, an eccentric, long-lost aviator who crash-landed on the island years before the castaways. In his first appearance, the castaways discover him still living there in solitude, afraid to return to a world that has changed too much. In his return episode, Wrongway briefly leaves the island and becomes a minor celebrity, only to crash again on his way back, happy to remain where he feels he truly belongs. Needless to say, he doesn’t show up again.
2. Zsa Zsa Gabor

Role: Erika Tiffany Smith
Best known for: Her glamorous persona, tabloid fame and roles in films like Moulin Rouge (1952)
Episode: “Erika Tiffany Smith to the Rescue” (Season 2, Episode 15)
Role: Zsa Zsa Gabor guest-starred as Erika Tiffany Smith, a fabulously wealthy heiress who discovers the island and is immediately smitten with the idea of converting it into a luxury resort. She becomes romantically interested in the Professor and briefly causes a rift among the castaways, especially among the women. Gabor’s over-the-top glamour and flirtatious manner added a touch of Hollywood decadence to the deserted island.
3. Vito Scotti

Roles: Multiple, including Dr. Boris Balinkoff and a Japanese sailor
Best known for: Character roles in The Godfather, Columbo, Get Smart and dozens of 1960s–1980s TV guest spots
Episodes: “So Sorry, My Island Now” (Season 1, Episode 15), “Diogenes, Won’t You Please Go Home?” (Season 1, Episode 31), “The Friendly Physician” (Season 2, Episode 29), “Ring Around Gilligan” (Season 3, Episode 9)
Role: Vito Scotti was one of the few actors to play multiple characters on Gilligan’s Island, often portraying zany, over-the-top caricatures. For instance, in “The Friendly Physician,” he plays the mad scientist Dr. Boris Balinkoff, who takes the castaways to his island under the pretense of medical care, only to use them for mind-swapping experiments. In “The Samurai,” he appears as a Japanese sailor who believes World War II is still ongoing. Scotti’s ability to slip into such bizarre characters made him a perfect fit for the series’ screwball tone.
4. Rory Calhoun

Role: Lord Beasley Waterford
Best known for: Hollywood leading man in 1950s Westerns and adventure films, including How to Marry a Millionaire
Episode: “Lovey’s Secret Admirer” (Season 3, Episode 19)
Role: In this late-series episode, Rory Calhoun portrays Lord Beasley Waterford, a suave British aristocrat who inexplicably ends up on the island and begins wooing Mrs. Howell. Lovey, flattered by his attention, entertains the idea of his affections, causing some unexpected jealousy from Thurston. Calhoun’s casting added an air of romantic elegance to the episode, and his presence was played both for comedic contrast and a surprising touch of genuine charm.
5. Don Rickles

Role: Harry
Best known for: Legendary insult comic, stand-up star and later film roles in Casino and Toy Story
Episode: “The Kidnapper” (Season 3, Episode 12)
Role: Don Rickles appears as Harry, a smooth-talking criminal comes to the island and holds the women on the island hostage in exchange for ransom money, but when he is captured they decide to try and reform him instead of holding him prisoner.
6. Sterling Holloway

Role: Burt
Best known for: Voice of Winnie the Pooh, Kaa in The Jungle Book, and other iconic Disney roles
Episode: “The Pigeon” (Season 3, Episode 28)
Role: Sterling Holloway appears as Burt, a gentle and absent-minded pigeon keeper who lives on the mainland. When the castaways discover a wounded homing pigeon on the island, the Professor tends to it and uses it to send a desperate message for rescue. The bird makes its way back to Burt, who is initially confused but eventually realizes the importance of the note. True to the spirit of the show, the message ultimately doesn’t result in the castaways’ rescue, but Holloway’s quirky charm and unmistakable voice bring a touch of whimsy to one of the final episodes of the series.
7. Kurt Russell

Role: Jungle Boy
Best known for: Future film star of Escape from New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China and numerous Disney films
Episode: “Gilligan Meets Jungle Boy” (Season 1, Episode 19)
Role: While exploring the island, Gilligan discovers a mute, wild boy living in the jungle—played by a young Kurt Russell. The castaways attempt to befriend and communicate with him, eventually learning of a natural helium vent nearby. Seeing a possible escape route, the Professor builds a hot-air balloon to carry a rescue message. However, the Jungle Boy secretly takes off in the balloon alone and is later reported to have landed on an aircraft carrier. Unfortunately, his inability to explain where he came from leaves the castaways still stranded.
8. Phil Silvers

Role: Harold Hecuba
Best known for: Star of The Phil Silvers Show, Broadway performer and comedy legend
Episode: “The Producer” (Season 3, Episode 4)
Role: When a plane flies overhead, the castaways learn via radio that egotistical Hollywood producer Harold Hecuba (Phil Silvers) is scouting the globe for new talent. After crash-landing on the island, Hecuba quickly begins exploiting the castaways, taking over the Howells’ hut and dismissing Ginger’s acting talent. Offended, Ginger refuses to leave even if rescued. To prove her worth, the group stages a musical version of Hamlet with Ginger as the star. Hecuba hijacks the production, performing it himself—then departs alone, eager to claim the idea as his own.
9. Strother Martin

Role: George Barkley
Best known for: Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, True Grit
Episode: “Take a Dare” (Season 3, Episode 16)
Role: While fishing, Gilligan and the Skipper hear a radio broadcast about a contest from the Take-A-Dare show: a man named George Barkley (played by Strother Martin) has been dropped on a deserted island to survive for a week and win $10,000. That island, of course, turns out to be the castaways’ own. When supplies begin to mysteriously vanish, the group discovers George has been stealing them. He refuses to help or share his transmitter, fearing disqualification if anyone assists him. Even bribery and flirtation don’t sway him. Ultimately, George sabotages the transmitter, throws it off a cliff, and departs the island by helicopter—only to be told in a radio interview that the prize money was hidden inside the very device he destroyed.
10. Larry Storch

Role: Jackson Farrell
Best known for: Corporal Randolph Agarn on F Troop, prolific voice actor in animated series
Episode: “Little Island, Big Gun” (Season 1, Episode 17)
Role: Larry Storch portrays Jackson Farrell, a bank robber who arrives on the island to hide out after a heist. Posing as a doctor, Farrell deceives the castaways, claiming his briefcase full of cash is intended for building a hospital. Once his true identity is revealed via a radio broadcast, Farrell takes the castaways hostage to prevent them from alerting authorities. His plan unravels when rival mobsters arrive, leading to a series of comedic misadventures.
