TOP STORIES

Green Acres was and remains a surreal little corner of the television universe where logic bent to whimsy, pigs read newspapers and Hungarian socialites milked cows in evening gowns. Premiering in 1965 as part of CBS’s “rural revolution,” Green Acres may have started as a fish-out-of-water sitcom, but it quickly evolved into one of the most delightfully absurd comedies of its time. While other shows leaned on canned laughter and conventional setups, this one gleefully broke the fourth wall, flirted with surrealism and doubled down on its own peculiar style.

At the heart of it all were Oliver Wendell Douglas and his glamorous wife Lisa, played to perfection by Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor, respectively. He longed for the quiet dignity of farm life; she preferred eggs Benedict and silk sheets (all of which is nicely set up in the theme song). Standing between them—and often stealing the show—was Arnold Ziffel, the television-watching pig with more personality than most prime-time leads.

This show was a masterclass in character comedy, brought to life by a cast and crew who knew they were making something weird and wonderful. You’ll find that sense of joy, playfulness and chaos in every behind-the-scenes photo. Whether it’s Richard L. Bare directing Arnold in his little canvas chair or Eva Gabor holding court in a full-length mink while milking a cow, Green Acres was committed to its own rules—and it worked, feeling a part of, yet distinct from, the shows it shared a “universe” with, The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction.

1. Farm life, fashion and fun

Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor share a relaxed moment between takes on the Green Acres set, perfectly capturing the warmth and chemistry that made Oliver and Lisa Douglas one of TV’s most beloved odd couples. Whether wrangling livestock or city luxuries, their onscreen dynamic was pure comedy gold — and offscreen, their friendship was just as genuine. Gabor’s trademark elegance (note the hat and floral ensemble!) was a constant, even in Hooterville.

2. Ready for your close-up, Mr. Ziffel?

Move over, Lassie, Arnold Ziffel is in the spotlight! The four-legged scene-stealer of Green Acres sits poised on a leopard-print cushion (naturally) under the bright lights of the set. While multiple pigs portrayed Arnold over the years, they all shared one thing: impeccable comedic timing and an undeniable charm that made them a fan favorite.

3. ‘Darling, it’s for you!’

Only in Green Acres could a phone call require climbing a telephone pole—in formalwear, no less! Oliver (Eddie Albert) and Lisa Douglas (Eva Gabor) share a confused moment on one of the show’s most hilariously impractical props: the Hooterville phone line. Lisa’s feather-trimmed pink robe adds a touch of Park Avenue flair to the farm town madness, capturing the culture clash that made the series such a surreal delight.

4. Has Little Bo Lisa lost her mind?

Eva Gabor channels storybook chic as Lisa Douglas in this fanciful Green Acres promo shot, donning a frilly pink gown and cradling lambs like she was born in a fairy tale — not on Park Avenue.

5. Lisa Douglas does dairy

Only Green Acres could give us Eva Gabor milking a cow by candlelight… in a white fur coat. Lisa Douglas never let Hooterville’s rustic charm get in the way of a dramatic fashion statement. Whether she was fluffing hay in evening gloves or delivering eggs in diamonds, Lisa brought Fifth Avenue flair to every farm chore—and somehow made it look effortless.

6. Hooterville meets the ‘Hills’

It’s a crossover celebration! At a 1965 cast party shared by Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies, Irene Ryan shows off her dance moves with a game Eddie Albert, drink in hand and cigarette at the ready. Donna Douglas, still in Elly May mode, looks on with delight, while Eva Gabor can be spotted in the background. It’s the kind of unscripted joy that proves life backstage could be just as memorable as what aired on screen.

7. The most stylish traveler of ‘Green Acres’

Time to pack the bags—Arnold Ziffel is headed for greener pastures (or at least a very glamorous vacation)! In this unforgettable promotional shot from Green Acres, Eddie Albert, Eva Gabor and everyone’s favorite pig pose for what looks like the most fabulous farmyard getaway ever. Decked out in a checked jacket and flanked by a steamer trunk and fur trim, Arnold proves once again he was the real star of Hooterville. This pig flew first class.

8. City slicker turned farmer (sort of)

Eddie Albert channels his inner Oliver Wendell Douglas—well-meaning, slightly flustered and dressed for court, not a cornfield. With a pitchfork in hand and a smile that suggests both confidence and mild confusion, Albert perfectly embodied the Manhattan lawyer who gave up skyscrapers for haystacks.

9. That’s a new kind of ‘piggy bank’

Arnold Ziffel, Wall Street whiz? In this hilariously on-brand Green Acres promo shot, everyone’s favorite porcine personality is perched atop a wagon overflowing with money bags. Dressed in his signature checked jacket and bow tie, Arnold looks like he’s headed straight from Hooterville to a high-stakes boardroom. While Oliver and Lisa Douglas may have struggled with farm life, it’s clear Arnold had a knack for business.

10. ‘Lights, camera, oink!’

Director Richard L. Bare goes over the day’s script with Arnold Ziffel in this 1968 behind-the-scenes gem. Decked out in sunglasses and a jaunty red scarf, Arnold looks every bit the Hollywood leading “man” as he reviews his lines from his personalized director’s chair.

11. Have apple will travel

Eva Gabor and Eddie Albert strike a hilariously telling pose in this early Green Acres publicity still, surrounded by crates of apples and clashing expectations. With Albert’s Oliver Wendell Douglas proudly inspecting his rural bounty and Gabor’s Lisa giving a look that practically says, “Darling, I thought we were going to Paris,” this image captures the culture clash at the heart of the series.

12. Everybody’s waiting for the pig!

It’s just another day in Hooterville, where the lighting is bright, the wallpaper is bold and the pig has top billing. This image captures the show’s famously unpredictable production environment. Eva Gabor waits patiently in full glam, while Arnold the Pig takes stage direction from his trainer—demonstrating the kind of focus that made him a surprise sitcom icon. In the background, Eddie Albert (in shirt and tie) observes with a wry smile, while a crew member arrives with what we can only assume is Arnold’s tea service.

13. Back to the farm, one more time

More than two decades after Hooterville first worked its rural magic on audiences, Eva Gabor, Eddie Albert and a new generation of Arnold the Piggy reunited for 1990s Return to Green Acres. The TV movie brought fans back to the whimsical world where pitchforks and pearls somehow coexisted.

Gabor and Albert beam with the kind of chemistry that made their original run so memorable, while Arnold—decked out in denim overalls and flanked by carrots and plush toys—remains the scene-stealer. For fans, it was a wonderful return to form.
