Elvis Once Bought the Limousine He Was Riding — And Gifted It to the Driver
Elvis Presley was a force to be reckoned with whether he was gyrating his hips around on a stage, smoldering in front of the camera on a film set, or belting out tracks at a recording studio. That legacy certainly hasn’t waned in the years since his passing. If anything, fans of the King have only grown stronger with their steadfast loyalty over time. That said, even the biggest Presley fans might not know about the kind gesture that was revealed in a 2005 interview on Larry King Live with his closest friends and loved ones.
Presley was known for his passionate temperament — it’s what made his iconic vocals and stage antics such an insatiable experience. Sure, it might also have led to some of the more scandalous stories from his past, but that wasn’t the case when Presley found himself hitching a ride for a performance at the Miami Beach Convention Center in 1970.
After landing in a helicopter at a local helipad, Presley was escorted by limo to and from the show, which was only 10 blocks away. It’s not too surprising to hear Presley traveled in such luxury even on short trips — only the best for rock and roll royalty, of course! However, it’s how he thanked the limo driver after his concert that proves what a kind heart Presley truly had.
While climbing back into the vehicle at the end of the night, Presley asked the driver whether he owned the limo they were in or if he worked for a company. The driver explained that it was owned by the company he worked for, which apparently didn’t sit too well with the King. As he made his way out of the limo, Presley responded, “you own it now.” That’s right, it only took two quick trips for the rock and roll icon to essentially give the driver the ability to start his own chauffeur service rather than rely on the smaller percentage of profit he’d likely been getting from a company.
It’s uncovering stories like this — and the timeless tunes Presley released throughout his career — that solidify his title as “king” for all these years.
