16 Wedding Cake Fails That Will Make You Feel Sorry For the Bride and Groom

A Fondant Fiasco

Note to future brides: Get a baker who has experience with fondant! This lopsided three-tier cake belonged to Instagram user @saylahvie, who didn’t let a little cake fail ruin her special day. In fact, the cake mess may have made the entire wedding just right.

“Our wedding was a train wreck from start to finish, and in a way, [it] couldn’t possibly have been more us.”

A Floral Failure

Bride-to-be Genevieve Myles was unpleasantly surprised on her big day by an unsightly wedding cake that needed a makeover. Thankfully, Myles was optimistic enough to fix her sorry-looking wedding cake into the Pinterest-inspired cake she wanted.

“On the day of the wedding, they had called to see if we were able to pick up the cake at a later time, which gave me that gut feeling that something was wrong,” Myles said. “When I went to pick up the cake my mouth dropped. I was in complete denial that that was my cake.”

“I took it because I need something to put on my cake table, but decided to fix it the best I could,” she said. We think she did a good job!

It’s the Taste That Counts, Right?

Baking is hard! Fortunately, Instagram user @theysing_ruby was more than understanding about this underwhelming wedding cake, which showed up on her big day.

Two more tiers and a few flowers could have made all the difference. At least she enjoyed eating the cake!

Photo Fraud

Celia Gustard and her husband-to-be were hoping to receive a black and beautiful tire wedding cake — the couple enjoy biking together, and thought the tire design would be a nice way to display that. Unfortunately, her baker was a fraud.

“We are bikers and thought the tire cake would be fantastic for our wedding day. We were so disappointed at the cake she brought to us that we refused to pay,” Gustard said. “The person stole photos of other peoples’ cakes, which were so wonderful, but she couldn't make!” Yikes — we’re just glad they didn’t have to pay for this mess.

Up in Smoke

Laurie Bowling asked for a two-tier rose gold ombre ruffle design, but she ended up with a tilted pink and white three-tier disaster.

“Not to mention it tasted like someone had been smoking around it”

Can you imagine? Cigarette smoke and elegant desserts — yuck! Talk about a bad mix.

A Delivery Disaster

What do you do when your wedding cake is delivered in a jumbled-up mess? Fix it! At least that’s what wedding cake rescuer Rina Careri did. What a transformation!

Spelling mistakes are the worst, especially when it’s written in icing on a wedding cake. "Congvatulations Jess & Anthong” the cake said — but we’re pretty sure that’s not how you spell “congratulations.” Even so, Jessica Peachman was happier than ever to be marrying her husband.

“The most important thing about my wedding wasn’t the cake, it was that I married the love of my life,” she said. “So even if things go wrong, don’t sweat it; just remember what the day is really about.”

A Melting Masterpiece?

This just in: The sun is hot. Don’t let your cake sit out in the summer heat like one forgetful couple did. Just look at those melted chocolate-covered strawberries. What a waste!

Practice Makes Perfect

Kathy Dixon was asked to bake a cake for her friend’s daughter’s wedding. It’s a good thing she had a practice run.

“I agreed to make the wedding cake for a friend's daughter, and I know it'll taste great, but this first practice cake looks like poo.”

Molly Sanchez’s attempt at a blueberry wedding cake looks pretty solid to us. But, she’s convinced her culinary skills are ready to make a debut on Netflix’s show Nailed It, which highlights hilarious baking and cooking fails.

So, this should go without saying, but just in case — don’t order your wedding cake by phone. If you do, you might end up with a pink-and-red birthday cake like Jason and Gyan did. Oops!

DIY Gone Wrong

This wedding cake made by Instagram user @weekatieweets definitely looks chocolatey. Maybe it just wasn’t what she had envisioned. Even so, we sure wouldn’t mind taking a bite!

Can’t Take the Heat

This poor cake decorator delivered a melted disaster to one steamy reception. We’re sure the buttercream frosting was beautiful at first, but it didn’t stand a chance against those high Haiti temps.

“These Port au Prince streets and Haiti heat just melted and shook my frosting and roses right off the cake,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank God I've learned the hard way and now bring extra frosting to redecorate my cakes on site.”

We hope more cake decorators take her advice!
