Merry Christmas in July! All About the Pre-Holiday Event and How You Can Celebrate

It’s never too early to deck the halls

It’s the holiday so nice, we celebrate it twice! Christmas in July is being celebrated around the world today, July 25, exactly five months ahead of the “most wonderful time of the year”! While we have the sun shining instead of snow falling and the temperature is just a bit too high to bundle up for winter festivities, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate. Just take a look at the famous Radio City Rockettes, who kicked off the festivities bright and early on the TODAY Show plaza complete with their dazzling red costumes and trademark high kicks!

“It’s usually like 15 degrees when you come, so I’m glad you guys are here and the weather is actually pretty nice,” show host Craig Melvin quipped to the dancers. The group took the opportunity to officially announce that they would return for this year’s 91st annual Christmas Spectacular beginning Nov. 8, which is a bit of an extended performance run compared to the year’s past.

What is Christmas in July?

Christmas in July is simply a celebration of the fact that the beloved holiday is less than half a year away!

In the United States, the idea is said to have been born at a girls’ camp in North Carolina “out of creativity and enthusiasm for the holiday,” explains Christmas tree company Balsam Hill. “In Europe and Australia, apart from the strong fervor for the holiday spirit, this occasion is also related to the weather. Europeans longed for the coolness of December, while Australians associated their July winter with the cold Christmases of countries in the Northern Hemisphere.”

How to celebrate Christmas in July

Options abound for ways to get into the holiday spirit this summer.

Get a Hallmark head start

You don’t have to wait a full year to have your Hallmark Christmas movie marathon! The channel recognizes Christmas in July with new titles premiering including Falling Like Snowflakes, An Ice Palace Romance, A World Record Christmas and more. Of course, you can always just snuggle up and watch your favorite holiday hits. Hallmark Channel is also hosting the Christmas in July Sweepstakes, where the grand prize is a VIP trip to the Hallmark Christmas Experience in Kansas City amongst other weekly prizes.

Shop for sales

You’ll have to hurry for this one, but Frontier Airlines is holding a sale offering flights for as low as $19 for select days of the week through Nov. 13! Tickets must be purchased by 11:59PM EST July 25. Be sure to take a look at the terms and conditions.

Balsam Hill is also holding its Christmas All July Sale. For a limited time, you can save up to 50 percent on artificial Christmas trees and holiday decor; QVC is offering discounts on a variety of merry and bright home products through July 31; Walmart’s Christmas in July sale includes deals on festive items from Halloween costumes to Christmas decorations for up to 60 percent off; and your holiday essentials are 10 percent off at Bed Bath & Beyond

Have a movie marathon

What’s better than cozying up and revisiting your most beloved Christmas classics? There’s no wrong time to laugh at Home Alone or have your heart warmed by The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Perhaps most appropriate for this time of year, watch 1940’s Christmas in July. The movie follows a clerk who is tricked into thinking he won a $25,000 contest prize and sets out to achieve his dreams including marrying his girlfriend and providing for his mother.
