What is ‘The Beatles—A Four-Film Cinematic Event’?
During the 2025 CinemaCon festival in Los Angeles, California, director Sam Mendes confirmed that he and Sony would not only be making The Beatles biopic, but that they were going to do so in four installments, allowing each member to be showcased in their own individual and unique way.
“We’re not just making one film about The Beatles—we’re making four,” Mendes said during his speech. “Perhaps this is a chance to understand them a little more deeply.”

Sony’s CEO Tom Rothman added to that, saying it would be “the first bingeable theatrical experience.”
Who’s playing The Beatles in the new four-part biopic?
Along with announcing the four films, Mendes also took the time to introduce who would be playing the four lead roles.
Joseph Quinn as George Harrison

First, there is Joseph Quinn, who will portray the late George Harrison. Quinn’s other credits include Dickensian (2015 to 2016), Stranger Things (2022), A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) and Gladiator II (2024). He is 31 and from London.
Harris Dickinson as John Lennon

Next is Harris Dickinson, an actor who made quite a name for himself thanks to films like The Darkest Minds (2018), Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), Where the Crawdads Sing (2022), The Iron Claw (2023), Murder at The End of The World (2023) and Babygirl (2024). He will portray John Lennon, the Beatles co-founder who was tragically killed in 1980.
Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney

Then, there is Paul Mescal, 29, who is best known for his work in Normal People (2020), Aftersun (2022), Foe (2023) and Gladiator II (2024). He will play Paul McCartney, the band’s pianist, bassist, songwriter and vocalist. McCartney shared the casting announcement on his Instagram page, so it’s safe to say he approved of Mescal playing him.
Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr

Finally, Ringo Starr will be played by Irish actor Barry Keoghan, 31. The actor’s other titles include The Killing of the Sacred Deer (2017), Dunkirk (2017), Chernobyl (2019), Eternals (2021), The Green Knight (2021), The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) and Saltburn (2023).
“I’m excited that [Mendes] has taken the madness of making four movies at the same time,” Starr told PEOPLE in 2025. “My life as a lad, John’s life, Paul’s life, George’s life, I mean, it must interact in some way…There’ll be Beatles in mine around when I joined, and there’ll be Beatles in Paul’s. We’ll all be there. So I’m excited to see what he does with it.”
The musician also joked that he heard Keoghan “was taking drum lessons, and I asked someone to tell him not to take too many.”
When will The Beatles films be released?

The Beatles biopics are expected to be released in April 2028, following a year of filming. It is unclear if all four of them will play back to back, if they will be released on the same day or one a week.
“The Beatles changed my understanding of music,” Mendes said at CinemaCon 2025. “I’ve been trying to make a movie about them for years.”
Mendes’s other projects include Road to Perdition (2002), Skyfall (2012), 1917 (2019) and Empire of Light (2022). He is 59 and has been married to his wife Alison Balsom since 2017.
