Plus, learn what star Micahel Keaton has to say about the anticipated sequel.

“Beetlejuice” — say his name three times and he will appear! And if you … wait 36 years, he will come back! That’s right: Beetlejuice is back and better than ever. The flamboyant ghost, as well as a few other select members of the original cast, are set to star in the much-anticipated sequel. But what is the movie going to be about, and why did they wait so long to film it? All of that and more below.

All about Beetlejuice 2

Beetlejuice 2 — or Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which is the movie’s official name — follows the Deetz family as they deal with a shocking death, causing them to move back into their Winter River home. But this time, they’re bringing along the newest member of their clan, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), Lydia’s (Winona Ryder) daughter. While there, Astrid accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife, letting the haunting and hilarious ghost Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) back into the family’s lives.

Tim Burton is set to direct the film, with Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder reprising their roles. Michael Keaton is also set to reappear as Beetlejuice.

“I was very nervous to see if we could pull it off again, but every day got more and more fun,” Keaton said about the new film. “I’ll tell you this, it’s really f—ing good. This cast is so good. Everyone is so friggin’ funny. It’s unbelievable how funny these guys are.”

Along with Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe are also joining the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cast. However, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Jones and Sylvia Sidney are not set to reprise their roles.

Why did they wait so long to make a Beetlejuice sequel?

Thirty-six years is a long time to wait for a movie sequel, especially given that the first film did so well during its initial release in 1988. However, Beetlejuice himself gave some insight into why fans of the original have had to wait for so long.

“We thought, ‘You got to get this right,” Keaton told PEOPLE about his and director Tim Burton’s feelings on a sequel. “Otherwise, just don’t do it. Let’s just go on with our lives and do other things.’ So I was hesitant and cautious, and he was probably equally as hesitant and cautious over all these years. But, once we got there, I said, ‘Okay, let’s just go for it. Let’s just see if we can do it if we can pull this off.”

Keaton added, “The one thing that[Burton] and I decided on early, early, early on from the beginning, if we ever did it again, I was totally not interested in doing something where there was too much technology. It had to feel handmade.

Apparently he got his wish — and the end result promises to be a treat for audiences as well as the cast and crew! “It’s the most fun I’ve had on set in a long time,” Keaton said.

When is Beetlejuice 2 set to release?

The much awaited sequel is set to hit theaters on September 6, 2024. However, if you simply cannot wait that long to catch up the Deetz family, the first film is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
