Not many films have captured the essence of youthful adventure quite like 1985’s The Goonies. Led by a young Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and other famous faces, this crew of misfits set out in search of alleged buried treasure in the hopes of saving their quaint town after an impending country club threatens their homes. In a last ditch effort to save the Oregon town of Astoria, they set out on the adventure of a lifetime, facing a series of threats and jaw-dropping obstacles along the way. Here, take a look behind-the-scenes at this iconic 80s flick!

Here, a young Ke Huy Quan and Jeff Cohen have an animated conversation with Goonies director Richard Donner, with the story’s creator Steven Spielberg playfully joining in in the back. While Ke Huy Quan continued to act, even earning himself an Academy Award in 2023 for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Jeff Cohen left life in front of the screen and instead pursued law in adulthood.

Aaaand…action!

John Matuszak, the actor beneath all the prosthetics that made the character of Sloth what it was, allegedly sat for about five hours in the makeup chair to get into character. Now that’s commitment!

A one-of-a-kind movie set

When looking at a place so spectacular, you feel as though it couldn’t possibly be a set on some soundstage—this had to be shot in a real, legitimate cave somewhere! Alas, leave it to some good old-fashioned Hollywood magic and dozens of talented set designers and you’ve got something one could only dream of! Imagine showing up to work each day and this is what your office looks like?

Anne Ramsey brought to life the matriarch of the Fratelli family, the crew also after One-Eyed Willy’s treasure, and it’s a role she brought to life expertly! Sadly, she passed only a few years after the film came out in 1988.

A famous face paid a visit to the set

The King of Pop and his sister, LaToya Jackson, once visited the set of The Goonies, resulting in this memorable photograph! “I remember when we were told that Michael Jackson was going to visit,” Ke Huy Quan reflected with The Guardian. “The cast and crew were so excited. We didn’t know what time he was arriving, so we were constantly looking over our shoulder. Sure enough, when he walked on to the set, everybody just stopped what they were doing–even the guy making the coffee. He was very shy. I think we made him nervous because there were so many people. Then we took those photos that you see on the internet. We were so giddy that he was there. He gave us tickets to watch him perform in Los Angeles, and gave us all a jacket, which some of us still have. Somehow I lost mine, which I’m very mad at myself for.”

Jeff Cohen’s hilarious portrayal of Chunk was one that we’ll always love!
