There’s a Real-Life Land of Oz in the U.S. and You Can Tour It
There’s no place like home–but if you’re a big “Wizard of Oz” fan, this Beech Mountain, North Carolina theme park is a pretty cool place to be, too.
Known as the Land of Oz, the mountain-top attraction includes a perfect replica of a yellow brick road to wander down, several creepy-looking trees with faces carved into them (who can forget those mean, apple-throwing Talking Trees from the movie?!), a bizarre castle, and a gate welcoming people to Oz.
The private theme park was abandoned in 1980 but reopens for one weekend every October (though sorry to report that tickets are already sold out for this year!) to the delight of fans and the intrigue of people like photographer Seph Lawless, whose hauntingly beautiful images of the park grounds have generated buzz for the park and are featured as part of his book, Bizarro: The World’s Most Hauntingly Beautiful Abandoned Theme Parks.
Visitors will see people dressed in character, so there’s the possibility of bumping into everyone from Dorothy to a Flying Monkey. Here’s a sneak peek of what it’s like to visit this strange park.
