From his outlaw country roots in the ’60s to his legacy after his death in 2003, Johnny Cash remains the pinnacle of cool. With his inimitable voice and mix of seriousness and rebellious swagger, the Man in Black set a template for all the country artists that came in his wake, and decades after he first hit the scene, he remains an icon.

Cash’s music is immortal, and so too is his wit and wisdom. Not only was he a brilliant performer, he also had some powerful things to say about love, life and music when he wasn’t onstage. Here are 10 of the greatest Johnny Cash quotes.

1. “I am not obsessed with death — I’m obsessed with living.”

Cash was known for tackling dark subjects in his music, and as he reached the end of his life, he was remarkably candid about mortality. At the same time, he maintained a sense of hope and honored the present moment, as evidenced by this quote.

2. “There’s no way around grief and loss: you can dodge all you want, but sooner or later you just have to go into it, through it, and, hopefully, come out the other side. The world you find there will never be the same as the world you left.”

It can be hard to put words to how one should deal with grief, but the country icon did it beautifully.

3. “She loves me in spite of everything. In spite of myself. She has saved my life more than once … She’s always been there with her love, and it has certainly made me forget the pain for a long time, many times. When it gets dark, and everybody’s gone home and the lights are turned off, it’s just me and her.”

Cash gave a truly swoon-worthy description of his relationship with fellow musician June Carter Cash. It’s the type of pure and lasting love we should all aspire to.

4. “I have always believed that people are people, no matter where . . . and that something that touches the heart of one person could touch all hearts.”

The musician was refreshingly steadfast in his refusal to judge people, and he believed that art was a potent tool of communication — even with people you don’t necessarily agree with.

5. “I’m not really totally alive until I’m on stage performing.”

As soon as he stepped onstage wearing that iconic all-black outfit, Cash captivated audiences, and he knew that performing was his life’s work.

6. “Sometimes I am two people. Johnny is the nice one. Cash causes all the trouble. They fight.”

The Man in Black battled plenty of demons, and described the constant push and pull of darkness in his life with dry humor.

7. “What’s meant most to me is feeling justified in the moves I’ve made and being happy in my relationship with my wife, my children and God.”

Cash may have projected an outlaw image, but at the end of the day he was a man who valued family and faith.

8. “You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don’t try to forget the mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.”

It can be hard not to let failure get you down, but these eternally truthful words from Cash are worth remembering during hard times — plus, psychologists believe embracing failure could just hold the key to success.

9. “All your life, you will be faced with a choice. You can choose love or hate . . . I choose love.”

The sentiment here is simple but all too true — especially given all the division in our world right now.

10. “You have to be what you are. Whatever you are, you gotta be it.”

Johnny Cash always kept it real, and he inspired countless fans to embrace their own authenticity.
