Live Aid at 40! Rare Behind-the-Scenes Photos of the 1985 Concert That Rocked the World
From Madonna to Paul McCartney to David Bowie to Bob Dylan, the lineup was pretty impressive
Live Aid, the star-studded 1985 benefit show that raised over $100 million for victims of famine in Ethiopia, remains one of the biggest and most-watched events of its kind. Organized by musicians Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, the concerts took place simultaneously in London’s Wembley Stadium and Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium, and featured a veritable who’s who of musical icons, from U2, the Who, Queen, David Bowie and Paul McCartney in London to Madonna, Joan Baez, the Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin and Patti LaBelle in Philadelphia—to name just a few of the dozens of artists that took to the stage.
Live Aid took place on July 13, 1985, and nearly 2 billion people worldwide watched the live broadcast of the show. In honor of the unforgettable concert’s 40th anniversary, we’re taking a look back at some of the best (and most ’80s!) photos from the event.
