With almost 3 million produced each day, J.M. Smucker’s Uncrustables sandwiches are no doubt a popular snack option for kids and adults alike. Not only a first choice in school lunches, but it also turns out these crustless PB &Js are beloved by the NFL. A recent New York Times article endeavored to answer just how many sandwiches each NFL team goes through each season. Read more to learn the results and why Uncrustables are these sportsmen’s first choice for pre-game fuel.

NFL teams consume nearly 100,00 Uncrustables annually

An analysis from The Athletic, a sports journalism service offered by The New York Times, revealed that NFL teams consume at least 80,000 Uncrustables a year.

That large number comes out to about 3,600 to 4,300 Uncrustables a week. At one time, that amount of Uncrustables could physically cover over 18 yards of a football field.

Twenty-four of the total 32 NFL teams provided data on their Uncrustables consumption and the Denver Broncos led the pack reportedly going through 700 crustless sandwiches per week.

The article touts more fun data visuals such as that each week, the NFL consumes the weight of almost three Travis Kelces in Uncrustables.

Kelce is a relevant measure as the Kansas City tight end said he eats Uncrustables “probably more than I eat anything else in the world,” on an episode of his “New Heights” podcast last year.

What are Uncrustables?

Uncrustables are pre-made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made without the crust sold by The J.M. Smucker Company.

The sandwiches, first created in 1995, are found in the frozen food section of grocery stores and only require thawing before consumption.

Uncrustables come in assorted flavors including strawberry, grape and raspberry jelly and Smucker’s now offers chocolate hazelnut and honey varieties of the classic sandwich.

Are Uncrustables good for athletes?

The results of the analysis by The Athletic indicate that Uncrustables are a popular choice among NFL athletes but are they a healthy one?

Jon Torine, former strength and conditioning coach for the Indianapolis Colts, told The Athletic that he doesn’t consider Uncrustables a “healthy,” pre-game fuel option but one that, “can do the job, especially when time is limited.”

The bread and jelly offer quick carbohydrates for players to fuel and restore glycogen stores to maintain their energy throughout a game.

The peanut butter contains both fat and protein to help them feel full and, again, give them the energy to make it through three-hour-long games.

These nutritional advantages in addition to being easy on the pallet and quick to digest make them a convenient and good-enough snack for NFL players.

The New York Times story revealed that citrus smiles were not only preferred by players but that the NFL’s game operations manual required each home team to provide “three dozen sliced oranges for halftime” for the visiting team.
